   Shasta State Historic Park
Shasta State Historic Park is well worth a visit. It is located several miles west of town on the 299. It is located about 2 miles from Whiskeytown lake. This used to be a large mining town with a population of about 2,500 people. Now it is composed of several old brick buildings on both sides of the road. The brick buildings on the west side of the road contain only their foundations and some still have their walls. The grass has grown in what used to be their floors. Many of these are in disarray and are only a shell of their former selves. Be sure to take a look at the courthouse as it has been converted to a museum. There is also a restored barn and a old stage coach. I always like taking a picnic lunch to this park and eating among the old buildings. A picnic allows one to sit and relieve the history of this unique gold mining town. Most mining towns in California have either settled back into the earth or have been rebuilt due to fire. The part of the park that you have to pay to get in is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 to 5. Admission is $2 and those between the ages of 6 and 12 are $1. For more information about this park please call PHONE NUMBER (530) 243-8194. Website:
