San Luis Obispo is known for its college town atmosphere, but there is much, much more to
San Luis then Cal Poly, the State University. San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the
name in its entirety, was founded as a mission town in 1772 by the catholic priest Father
Junipero Serra. This is the fifth of the California missions, and the first to use tile.
San Luis Obispo is a town small enough that it is fairly easy to find your way
around. The downtown is small and very pedestrian friendly. With the
recent expansions of the downtown parking garages, the demand for
downtown parking has been somewhat lessened.
