This island, the second largest of the British Islands, lies west of England and south-west of Scotland. It gives its name to the sea that separates it from Great Britain.
The distance from Scotland to Ireland is but twelve miles across the North Channel, from England and Wales the distance is more than fifty miles across St. George’s Channel.
