Ngoma Safari Lodge is located on the edges of Chobe National Park in Botswana. This fairly new property opened in May 2011 and was officially dedicated in July 2011 with his Excellency, Botswana's President Seretse Khama Ian Khama attending the opening ceremonies. This is isolated luxury at its finest and rawest; the lodge is accessible by any of 3 dirt roads - which are more like 4wd tracks among the bush - there are no signs and you must … [Read more...]
Mauna Kea, Hawaii – March 2012
Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the state of Hawaii. It is located on the big island and tops out according to the 1955 geological marker located at the summit at 13,796 feet. The true summit is accessible via a short hike from the main road near the top observatories. If the weather is decent and there is not snow and ice on the road the summit will be open by driving or hiking (yes we met some people who had hiked up 5000 feet from the … [Read more...]
German food in Berlin
As Berlin is a multicultural capital, its food has many foreign influences; flavors from Turkey, India, Russia, Czech Republic and Poland are combined with the traditional German essence to make a delicious melting pot of flavors. However, despite the international influences, it is still possible to differentiate the most authentic flavors of the German cuisine. You have been roaming around the city for couple of hours and wonder, why do … [Read more...]
The Wende Museum, Culver City
I've been visiting Los Angeles and Orange County museums for a number of years - taking advantage of the variety and numbers of museums in the area whenever time permits. A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit the Wende Museum located in a suite in an unassuming business park in Culver City. All visits are arranged in advance by appointment only. Wende, in German means "turning point," making reference to the fall of Communism. The focus … [Read more...]
All Aboard
All Aboard by Jim Loomis This (3rd edition) is the definitive book to train travel in North America. The recent train movie "Unstoppable" starring Denzel Washington won't put a stop to the increase in train travel. High gas prices, hassles in airports etc have helped contribute to an increase in ridership over the past few years. The chapter "how it all began" provides excellent perspective and history of trains in the United States. and … [Read more...]

Giant Prawns & Birthdays
Syy got up at 330am this morning to drive an hour to pick up some huge prawns from local farmers. The government provides the baby prawns and then these farmers raise the prawns until they are full grown. The "prawn" market is only in a certain town and each farmer apparently only has a limited supply. Oh and for some reason the market is only open in the wee hours of the morning! Anyway, tonight we celebrated several family birthdays by … [Read more...]

Escaping the Monotony! Solo traveling in Vietnam
Being an aggressively passionate traveler, I have a very low tolerance for mechanical life that comes along with the working environment. This leads to frustration with a need to elope, to explore a new destination. I decided to take a few days off and chose to fly to Hanoi. I was both, backpacking solo and traveling to Vietnam for the first time. With great excitement I landed in Hanoi. Hanoi is full of life and to me it came across … [Read more...]
