I’m sitting in the Atlantic, squinting from the glare of the sun over the water. Its 6pm but the sun is still bright. I sit on my board and let the waves pass underneath me. The bay gets busy in Imsouane. Magic Bay lays claim to one of the longest waves in Africa, and the tourists and locals alike are waiting their turn for a smooth ride, over the glassy ocean, all the way in to the beach. Quite far north, and in the build-up to solstice, the sun doesn’t set until around 10pm. The flowers were in full bloom in parks and roadside. There were blue skies every day but the air still felt crisp, fresh, not the back-of-the-bus kind of heat I associate with summer in the cities of the UK. Although it seems pretty extreme if you look it up online, with symptoms listed such as delusion, hallucination and even vomiting, I just mean that when I first arrived I was a bit confused over what all the fuss was about, and I can see how it can be a bit of a shock when things don’t seem like they do in the movies.
