When you arrive at the expansive set of sand that forms Coogee’s – head directly south along the path on top of the cliffs that overlook the ocean. Soon you will come to the entrance of Wylie’s – head down the steps and pay the inexpensive admission at the entrance. Then opt for sunning on the deck, a […]

Trying to avoid Bondi like the plague on the last day of 2012 we headed straight for Coogee. So did many others – there were more views of people than sand. Walking up the coastal walk I stumbled upon Wylies, boasting public swimming baths perched on the edge of the cliffs with its own sea pool built into the existing sandstone rock next to the crashing waves. These are Australia’s oldest […]

We are having a great time in Budapest so far! Enjoyed 3 hours today in the public baths in various pools ranging in temp from 20C to 40C including the 70C sauna -whew! Did you know some of the residential parts of town are littered with caves under the homes? We spent 5 hours spelunking through a 19km long cave. At times you could barely squeeze through a number of parts of the cave it was so narrow and rocky. […]

It is a unique experience that is culturally ingrained in the Moroccan society. Taking public baths is such a different concept compared to the western ideal of how to take a bath – which is usually quite solitary. In addition to providing a source for cleaning oneself, hammams are great meetings places and sources of conversation. The closest venue in western society that comes close to a hammam might be the local barbershop. I had the privilege of being […]
