The amazing Huascaran - Peru's tallest mountain. First reached
the summit by Annie Smith Peck at age 58, a woman *way* ahead of her time in
the mountaineering field. (Born in 1850) The world's only major mountain to
be first summited by a woman.
www.ric.edu/rpotter/smithpeck.html In 1970 an earthquake caused huge ice
chunk to come crashing down, resulting in mud & rock flow that
instantaneously killed 20,000 people in nearby town. To date that was South
America's worst earthquake in terms of number of people killed. More
widespread than just the Huaraz area. |

We had to do almost vertical climbing to get past the waterfall
rock face up to the lake. We had one ladder to help. |
