The Three Places You Should Visit in Uruguay – as Soon as Possible and Slightly Off Season

May 7, 2015 by Claudia Tavani3 Comments

Uruguay attractions

I arrived in Uruguay at the very end of a four months backpacking trip. I was exhausted, and all I wanted to do was rest, lay in the sun, enjoy the sea breeze, eat nice food and write. My expectations were met and exceeded, and by the time I boarded the first of a number of flights that would take me back to Sardinia, I knew I was in love with the country and would have to go back in the future.   Locked between Argentina and … [Read more...]

Exploring the World’s Two Largest Wine Caves & Wine Collections, Moldova

May 4, 2015 by Dave6 Comments

I first read about Moldova's ancient winery history several years ago in an inflight magazine while jetting over the skies of Finland somewhere. The thousands of years of wine making history certainly appealed to me as well as the fact Moldova is home to the largest underground wineries in the world. While stumbling through the streets of Chisinau after being dropped off by the bus from the airport I spotted a little tourist office called Simgal … [Read more...]

Loco Moco: The Ultimate Hawaiian Comfort Food

May 2, 2015 by Jamin TomLeave a Comment

What is it? One of my all-time favorite Hawaiian foods, the Loco Moco is a concoction of ground beef, fried egg, gravy and sticky rice. If you have not discovered the pleasures of eating this, be sure to mark it down on your bucket list. It’s even easy enough to make on your own! Hawaii is truly a culinary melting pot and the LocoMoco is living proof that when Western cuisine meshes with Asian, good things happen. Really good things. Before I … [Read more...]

Ride of Your Life by Ran Zilca

May 2, 2015 by DaveLeave a Comment

Author Ran Zilca sets out on a journey, not a long one but a journey nonetheless. A journey doesn't need to involve months or years but it should involve elements of being able to revitalize oneself and see things from a new perspective. This book is both a travel memoir based on the experiences and people that Ran meets as he makes his way from New York to California solo on the back of a Yamaha V-Star 950. Remarkably Ran had never owned a … [Read more...]

Kokoda Homestay Papua New Guinea – May 2015

May 1, 2015 by Dave1 Comment

Most people who visit Kokoda in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea do so to make the 8-10 day walk on the Kokoda Trek. This trek is the site of severe battles during World War II between the Australians and the Japanese with local Papua New Guineans often acting as "carriers" ferrying supplies for the troops. However, a visit to this area can have additional rewards by staying in local villages. Kokoda Homestay helps arrange your stay … [Read more...]

Road Trips: Why Do We Do Them?

April 28, 2015 by Sheryl Tey1 Comment

Road Trips. Have you ever wondered why people go on road trips, when we can easily book a fully planned holiday from one of the local travel agencies? Planning and booking a road trip is a downright hassle, but I promise that once you’re on the road, you’re not going to regret it. Trust me, I’ve just gotten back from my own road trip to the South Island of New Zealand last week, and now I’m already itching to go on another one. So, road trips: … [Read more...]

A Few Musings on First Night in Moldova

April 24, 2015 by Dave3 Comments

Sometimes you meet inspiring travelers while on the road - such was the case this evening in Chisinau, Moldova. I met a young woman traveler from Japan who took bought a 50CC motorbike in Irkutsk Russia and rode it some 14,000 kilometers solo from Russia to the Romanian Moldova border. She had stories of her time on the road as a trip of this length will invariably create. She camped much of the time but when it was raining or otherwise bad … [Read more...]

Understanding London – The north/south River Thames divide

April 23, 2015 by Jane Gibbons5 Comments

London really is a tale of two cities, as there is a clear divide between the northern and southern parts of the Thames. For non-locals, this may seem a bit silly, but for Londoners it does mean more than you’d think! If you’re preparing to visit London, you could do worse than learn some of the major differences so that when people ask you, you’re well informed and ready to come back with a fact or two. If you want to know more about the … [Read more...]

Backpacker’s Prayer

April 22, 2015 by Justin CarmackLeave a Comment

I found this taped to a wall in a bar in Riga, Latvia, and I thought it was pretty funny so I wrote it down! Also check out 10 Things to do in Riga! I'm not very religious, but I thought this was a great backpacker's prayer!  --Heavenly father, look down on us as your humble, obedient backpackers, who are doomed to travel this earth, taking photographs, mailing post cards, buying souvenirs and walking around in drip dry underwear. Give us … [Read more...]
