Winter to Summer overnight

February 9, 2011 by Dave2 Comments

The winter we had has quickly become summer; its become bloody hot - tonight were hunched over hot coals cooking "moo grad tot" (translated to pork and a pan) in this heat coupled with drinking red wine from Bordeax and- the boiling point is quickly reached. Its still 32 C past 9pm and supposed to be warming up more in the next few days. While quietly working in the hammock under the house with my seemingly inexhaustible supply of Spy Wine … [Read more...]

Undiscovered Brunei

February 8, 2011 by Dave8 Comments

Brunei Darussalam (meaning an Abode of Peace) is a country that one often cannot even locate on the world map. When I told friends I was coming to Brunei one said "oh, why don't you also visit India since its so close." Others told me they had to look the country up on Google Maps. A geographical lesson is obviously in order. Brunei is located on the large island of Borneo and is surrounded by the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. The rest … [Read more...]

Intro to Santa Barbara

February 5, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

Santa Barbara is like a bright tapestry, woven from time, and enriched with the colors of history and culture. Some cities grow old and then slowly die. Santa Barbara never grows old, just more elegant and appreciative of its past. Words cannot begin to describe the intimacy and sophisticated flavor of this city, only experience and a stay here, can do that. In 1925 a devastating earthquake left the downtown in ruins. Santa Barbara rebuilt … [Read more...]

Grounded

February 2, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

Grounded by Seth Stevenson this word is not in the vocabulary of any frequent flyer today but in this case it is the title of Seth Stevenson's intriguing new travel book. This is the modern day tale of how Seth and his girlfriend Rebecca travel the globe *without* ever setting foot inside a jet. This is somewhat of a logistical nightmare in today's age of waking up in New York and eating dinner in Paris the same day. Their story starts when … [Read more...]

Thailand Village Rice Rats

January 29, 2011 by Dave3 Comments

I always tell people we eat rats here to varying responses including one of disbelief and disgust. However these are not Bangkok Rats, er, city rats, rather they live in the unpolluted rice fields. My wife's brother makes bamboo traps by hand for catching these rats. The traps are simple in design but very effective. They are spring loaded by a string which bends the long part of the trap into the shape of a bow when the trap is loaded. A … [Read more...]

Back in Thailand

January 26, 2011 by Dave3 Comments

There is such a contrast between the countries of Brunei and Thailand and nowhere is this more evident than at their respective airports. Usually for International flights I allow about 2 hours to get to the gate and with some extra time but in Brunei the airport is so small, quiet, and there are not so many flights that even 40 minutes is usually enough time to check in, go through security, get to the gate and still have time left … [Read more...]

More touring in Brunei

January 24, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

Finally after a week I got the chance to check out Brunei's well known water villages - these are just a short ride across the river from the main part of Bandar seri Begawan. I was touring with Adam Tan, the owner of Travel Hub.com (info@travelhub.com.bn ) a local agency that offers a number of personalized tours in Brunei. The homes are on stilts (parking is underneath for each family's personal boat, if they have one) and all the homes are … [Read more...]
