Benidorm is not just about sun loungers and beaches

May 27, 2013 by Jennifer T.Leave a Comment

With its near year-round sun, great nightlife and incredible atmosphere, it is little surprise that Benidorm remains one of the most popular places for Brits to visit. As much fun as whiling away the lazy hours by the pool and sea are though, there is so much more to discover from this corner of Spain.

A particularly great activity is a Jeep Safari, which takes place in the nearby Costa Blancan countryside. A rough terrain, it is a great way to spend a full day away from the hubbub of the beaches and main strips, and see Spain in the raw.

The best way to go is with one of the private operators recommended by reputable tour reps, and those from Co-op Travel are always on the ball. It helps ensure the quality of the drivers and the experience. You can get picked up from your hotel too and it is pretty much all fun from there.

People who have tried this out speak of good condition 4x4s, great company in terms of co-riders and drivers who tend to be informative, chatty and fun.

The real fun, however, usually starts when riders go off-road, and start churning up the dirt across valleys, lakes and old riverbeds. To start, expect it to be dusty and bumpy but, as the ride gets higher up into the mountains, things often take a chilly turn. This is not unpleasant, having come from the heat of the coast, but may catch some riders unawares, so a light jumper or coat is sensible to take.

A lot of jeep tours take a pit stop to let riders refuel with a delicious, locally-sourced lunch, then the safari continues deeper into the countryside, taking in some pretty impressive waterfalls and more great views. Little villages are passed through too, but the highlight is when it comes to an end at the Algar waterfalls and the inviting plunge pools. There a few feelings better than going from sweater to swimming shorts in one easy movement.

The Jeep Safaris may well be one of the best things to do in Benidorm. However, there are many more activities to keep the family entertained. The twin parks of Mundomar, with stunning marine life, and Aqualandia for a whole world of water fun, are fantastic for example.

All across Benidorm though there are things to do, when a break from laying around in the sun is needed.
