Sonya, the ‘white angel’ of the desert is a doctor dedicated to helping the Navajo people. While not fully defined in terms of an exact era, the story most likely takes place in the 1920s or early 1930s. This tale of western romance is focused around Sonya; her boyfriend Rod lives on the east coast but has made it very clear he will marry her sooner than later.
But then she meets a mysterious man who rides alone in the desert. A bandit with a complicated past, she finds herself strangely attracted to him. Pulled away by his posse, their relationship is supposedly over. But then she discovers something she wasn’t supposed to find and is kidnapped and flown ‘south of the border’.
The end of the story runs breathlessly. Will Sonya be rescued? Where is the bandit? Will his past be revealed? Will they be together in the end?
Roe is a talented author who brings a story of romance and perseverance to life, a relevant tale that crosses time and generations. Roe first published this story in 1933; she was a prolific author who penned more than 30 novels including her first, Maid of the Whispering Hills, published in 1912. And nine of her books were made into films including Splendid Road, starring Lionel Barrymore, Primal Lure, starring William S. Hart, Maid of Whispering Hills and Tharon of Lost Valley. Unfortunately some of these films have been lost to the perils of time.
