This delightful read transports readers on a journey around the world; it is the story of being unemployed, middle-aged and home-free, traveling around the planet pursuing purpose through volunteering and gaining experiences rather than things.
McAnally brings the readers to remote projects, often involving islands including off the coast of Belize, Vanuatu, Tonga, Bora Bora, Palau, Fiji and Saint Barthélemy.
Bouncing around from project to project, the story takes an unexpected turn when in 2016, she takes a crew position on a sailboat with Captain Gary, an older gentleman who discovered sailing later in life. Based on his lack of nautical miles, he had yet to gain real world sailing experience.
They depart Florida in 2016, sailing south into the Caribbean; boat problems (pretty much guaranteed when sailing), personalities, tight quarters and a lack of experience could have driven McAnally off the 12-metre monohull at first chance. Instead she and Gary find connection and an understanding in each other and begin to bond.
Their relationship blooms and several years later he asks her to marry him while sailing in St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
This book is a must read for those who enjoy reading about adventure, travel and romance. And self-discovery and personal transformation.
