JulieI’m an aussie residing in Georgia USA. I do the transAmerica/transpacific flight regularly, so I know the value of packing light. I have a passion for packing light; less weight, less stress. The key to packing light is lightweight, practical, comfortable headwear….it stretches the travel wardrobe further and minimizes the number of layers required to stay warm (as most of our body warmth is lost via the top of our head). Savvy travelers pack light!

JulieHi Dave, Sorry for not replying sooner. Have you been to Australia yet? If not make sure you visit my favourite state, Queensland. It’s tropical and I love the heat. I’ll be back there in May 2005. I looked at your packing list. You could travel a lot lighter in Queensland…even in the winter months. Some of the things you list for packing can be purchased when you arrive in Australia. Even your ball hat. It’s nice to buy useful souvenir hats and clothes from other countries. Wear them while you are there and give them to family and friends when you return.
My favourite adventure/travel clothing store is Katmandu. There’s a couple in Brisbane. Katmandu has sales in December- January so you could pick up some nice outter wear.
As for your toiletries. Take only enough to get you there and maybe day 1. You can buy it there. Even first aid kits for travelers could be purchased when you arrive. Sample new brands…light travelers need open hearts and minds. And if the exchange rate is good at the time you reap the financial benefit.
Global Gossip is my favourite internet place. It has all the necessary services for an independent traveler. There’s one in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
Be sure to check the climate for your destination….especially when traveling from northern to southern hemisphere. No sense packing thermals when every day is 32 degrees celcius and then some.
A beanie kind of hat is the best to pack. You may need it on the flight then pack it away for the whole trip if you are leaving winter for summer. You could need it on the return. It’s very easy to catch a cold when you return in January….after only needing shorts and sandals in the southern summer.

DvaeNo problem, I didn’t check your post until recently. Yep, I was in Australia for a week or so earlier this year. Yes Queensland is awewsome! I was in the Brisbane area and visited most of that city as well as north and south along the famous coasts there. Yes, I also love the heat and the tropics. I could see moving there in a minute, not that crowded compared to many places I have been and great weather, at least when we were there, not to mention Brisbane being by far the cleanest city I’ve ever been in!
I can’t wait to return to Australia and spend much much more time there. It helped I had a friend who lives in Brisbane who was an absolutely wonderful tour guide.
