Let’s not tell the world just yet. Thousands of islands and perhaps thousands more at low tide. The Philippines offers friendly people, fabulous weather for most months of the year and depending where you are an escape from nasty typhoons and other South Asia treats. Negros Oriental is a fabulous undiscovered region although APO island and Sigijour Island are near by. Then there is Quezon closer to Manila with rural and ocean discoveries worth pursing. Of course there are the better known Bacol, etc. however believe Dave’s comments there are many more options to explore. You could spend a life time fixed on the fabulous seafood and varied cuisine offered everywhere. Once again the Philippines has not enjoyed a respute from the storied security issues and turmoil in their political stability however over time it continues to prevail. The Philippines are still a bargain but the Koreans, Japanese and now mainland Chinese are making their mark in a number of places from the luxury to the hidden treasures off the beaten track. No matter. You have time to explore and given the constant threats in Indonesia with nature and people conflict the Philippines is where our money stands.:D

There are many places worthy for great hiking and trekking. With vast array of world class resort, the Philippines is a worthy place for backpacker enthusiasts like me.:)
