Cameron Highlands: 3 days itinerary

October 1, 2024 by RVTravelUpsLeave a Comment

The Cameron highlands are a breathtaking area high up in the mountains in Malaysia. The region is renowned for the tea plantations, ancient forest and stunning views.

We have been traveling the world for a while now, and the Cameron highlands still have a place in our top 10 destinations. We have spent 3 days in the Cameron highlands and fell absolutely in love with the place. There is lots to do and see.

The Cameron highlands are a popular tourist destination. There are buses going from every part of the country that will take you to the highlands in a few hours. The bus ride is a little challenging but it takes you through the most beautiful areas of the country.

We recommend spending about three days here. The best way to see the region is by taking tours. It is not the easiest area to get around. Tours can take you to the best places and show you the prettiest views.

Cameron highlands

In the state of Pahang in central Malaysia, lies the Cameron highlands. The hill station is about 1500 meters above sea level.

The Cameron highlands are named after the british explorer, William Cameron. Sir William was commissioned by the colonial government to map out the Pahang area which he did in 1885. The Cameron highlands became a retreat during the colonial period because of its pleasant climate opposed to the tropical high temperatures in the rest of the country.

The region became famous because of the tea plantations. The plantations still form a large part of the landscape and are of economic importance for the region.

The Cameron highlands have much more to offer than just tea. The mossy forest is an absolute must see. The area is also renowned for its many strawberry and flower farms.

The Cameron highlands are surrounded by ancient forests that offer many opportunities for outdoor adventures.

When visiting the Cameron highlands, we recommend you stay in either Tanah Rata or Brinchang. The towns are located very central in the area and from here you can easily explore the region. There are many great hotels for different budgets. There are also multiple restaurants that serve local, and western food.

3 day itinerary

This 3 day itinerary is based on our own experience. We did all the activities we recommended in this itinerary ourselves and had such a great time.

Before you go to the highlands, here is a short list of items you want to pack.

  • Rainjacket
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Hiking shoes
  • Extra layers

The climate in the Cameron highlands is very different from the climate in the rest of the country. The humidity is very high but the temperatures can get a lot lower than in the rest of Malaysia.

Day 1

We are going to start this trip strong and start the day at one of the most famous tea plantations of the highlands, The Cameron Bharat Tea Plantation. We advise you to take one of the guided tours. You can learn all about the tea production process and stroll the picturesque tea fields.

After the tour, make sure to enjoy a freshly brewed local tea in one of the tea houses. You can drink your tea overlooking the area.

Our next activity is to visit a local temple. We are going to visit the Sam Poh temple. This is a buddhist temple that features amazing architecture.

If you still have energy, have a quick stop at the time tunnel museum. We accidentally came across this museum and it was such a fun surprise. This museum is essentially just a local museum about the history of the Cameron highlands. The entry is just a few dollars. You can even pick up some strawberries at the local farm located alongside the museum.

Day 2

On the second day we were going to enjoy some nature. The first stop of the day is the mossy forest. We recommend taking a tour up here as it is a long walk uphill and it is very hard getting a taxi up in the mountains.

The mossy forest is a national park. It is one of the oldest forests in the world. It truly is a once in a lifetime experience walking between trees that have been there for centuries. The moss and mist make it such a serene and almost mystical experience. The entry to the mossy forest walking route is a few dollars and definitely worth it.

After visiting the mossy forest,a great next stop Gunung Brinchang. This is the highest peak in the Cameron Highlands. Here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

We recommend you end the day at the Parit Falls or Robinson Falls. You can take a short hike to one of the nearby waterfalls for some nature exploration.

Day 3

The third and last day. Let’s drink some more tea! Today we are going to visit the BOH tea plantations. The plantation itself is beautiful. You can take a free tour of the old tea factory. There is also a nice shop where you can buy some local tea. They have so many amazing flavors. At the tea house you can enjoy a view over the plantation while drinking some delicious tea  and try a local piece of pie.

After the Boh tea plantation, we are going to visit the Cameron lavender garden. Besides lavender, you can also enjoy many other flowers and you can try the locally grown strawberries! Make sure you try lavender ice cream. It’s delicious.

To end our trip of the beautiful Cameron highlands, Explore Tanah Rata Town. The town of Tanah rata has not changed much since the British colonial period. The architecture in this town is much different then in any other part of the country. Enjoy the local stores and make sure to eat some of the Malaysian delights. The town has such a special atmosphere. Enjoy your last night in the Cameron highlands.

Make memories

When you’re planning your trip to Malaysia, please don’t skip the Cameron highlands. There really is nothing like it. It offers such a different experience then all other places in Malaysia, maybe even in Asia. The Cameron highlands are very safe and well developed. It is a wonderful stop for all ages and a must see in Malaysia.
