Fishing is excellent in the Owens Valley and
in the nearby mountain streams and reservoirs. A good place to begin is
the Owens River. One particular location I like to fish and relax at is
a stretch of the Owens River found at the end of East Lye street. This
street can be found in downtown Bishop. Take it from downtown and drive
about 2 or 3 miles east until just before the small bridge that crosses
the Owens River. On the right hand side there will be a dirt road (right
before the bridge) that runs along the side of the Owens River. Off of
this road are several smaller dirt roads that lead short distances to
the fishing areas on the actual river.
The water in the Owens River is very fast moving, so beware if you have
small children around.
There are many "hot spots" for fishing in the Bishop
area. One magical place which is a real treat for fisherman and non
fishermen alike is Lake Sabrina. Rarely do you find a place of
such beauty. Located at 9,100 feet its an alpine lake surrounded by
aspen covered slopes - a granite island sits in the lake framed by the
other end of the lake and the high sierra peaks. You can hike around
this lake and if you have some time and want to do some high country
backpacking and camping you can hike up to a plethora of other less
populated lakes all the way up to 12,000 feet. It is easy to reach Lake
Sabrina - you take West Line Road (Highway 168) West from downtown
Bishop and drive about 22 miles until the highway ends and becomes a
narrow paved road which ends at the parking lot at Lake Sabrina. There
is a free boat launch, a cafe and a small store which rents boats
(motorized and non motorized). For more information visit:
