The town of Lucla is where most people fly
to in order to start their hike or trek. The elevation here is about
9,100 feet and it is better to fly here, then to Namche Bazaar which is
situated at 11,700 feet. I say this because it is easier to acclimate
yourself to lower elevation.
This town is fairly large compared to the rest of the towns scattered
along the trail on the way to Everest Base Camp. Don't expect any luxury
in any of these towns. Lucla's main street
was basically a small creek, with water flowing everywhere. People had placed
large stones and flat rocks in the middle of the street, and you could hop
from stone to stone in order to stay dry. There were vendors in this town
selling everything from fresh citrus to small trinkets. There are lots of
little lodges here, some on the main street and some nearby. Most people
stay here as their last stop on the way back from the trail.
