Sunrise at the Grand Canyon

October 14, 2019 by Jacki UengLeave a Comment

As one might imagine, watching the sunrise at the Grand Canyon, a United Nations-dubbed World Heritage Site, is nothing short of amazing. Coming in at about 2,000 square miles, the Grand Canyon is truly massive. It’s so big, in fact, that watching the sunrise in one section of the canyon is oftentimes a completely different experience than watching it from another area. Why? The Grand Canyon has a huge variety of terrains and biomes. You can find … [Read more...]

Making the most out of your Minneapolis layover

October 11, 2019 by Abdul Rastagar2 Comments

So you have a long layover at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport? You can do what most people do - take the train over to nearby Mall of America and join the packed masses jamming through the second largest mall in North America. Or you can get off a couple of stops sooner on that same train and find yourself all alone in nature, hiking among the beautiful marshes of the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. I'll take option 2 anytime. Get … [Read more...]

Dhanushkodi – A Tale of Oceans and Ape Men

September 29, 2019 by The Clueless MuniLeave a Comment

The Legend Indian Hindu mythology has it that Lord Rama built a bridge some 50 kilometres long connecting India with Lanka (now Sri Lanka) off the coast of Tamil Nadu in South India to rescue his wife Sita from the evil clutches of the demon king Ravana. And he pulled off this engineering marvel with the help of his million-strong Vanara (Ape men) army along with magical ‘floating rocks’ and named it Rama Setu. (Rama’s Bridge) Valmiki further … [Read more...]

A Little Bit of Malta on my Mind

September 15, 2019 by Dave8 Comments

I proceeded to a tiny room at my hotel in central Valletta, oddly enough having to pass through the restaurant first. Many elderly ladies were absorbed in a riveting game of Bridge and I had to slink past their tables without bumping into them. Finding a balcony I stood overlooking the scenic water and Fort Saint Angelo in the distance while absorbing the smells of the salty water, the warmth of the Mediterranean sunshine and the tantalizing … [Read more...]

Adventure on the River: West Virginia Whitewater

September 8, 2019 by Amber MacPherson1 Comment

It was July 4th at the New River Gorge in West Virginia. It was dark, and I was on the roof of a truck clinging to the roof rack as we wound through the twisting back roads en route to the edge of the gorge. This had not been the plan. We had ended up loading the truck down with a couple of kegs and as many raft guides as we could fit after the trailer that was supposed to deliver us to the party developed a flat tire. We had unhitched it and … [Read more...]

All Aboard the Australia Bandwagon

September 2, 2019 by Beth SeagerLeave a Comment

Sitting on a 17-hour flight I felt like an ungrateful child.  I had the opportunity to take an amazing trip halfway around the world. UK office blocks are full to the dropped-ceilings with dreams of Down Under. Australia had just never been on The List. My husband and I were visiting friends who had fallen in love with Sydney and emigrated.  I assumed it would be very similar to the UK, and when we landed, it was.  Everything is in English, … [Read more...]

Mumbai- An Irresistibly Fascinating City

August 27, 2019 by Bhakti Luhar2 Comments

According to me, words fall short to praise the Mumbai city popularly known as the “City of Dreams” in India. Previously known as Bombay, it is a city that never sleeps which is absolutely true. This mesmerizing city offers a blend of the ultramodern architecture, historical monuments, beaches, hills and a lot more. Mumbai is also the powerhouse of Indian business, industry, trade, financial and entertainment capital of India. A perfect mix of … [Read more...]

Misadventures of a Gringo in Colombia

August 19, 2019 by Dusty and Sparky1 Comment

Upon leaving the unexpectedly small Cartagena airport, I was welcomed by a huge billboard featuring a Colombian Elvis impersonator. The other passengers who had also just arrived were poppin’ into little yellow micro-machine cabs and spinning off into their own assorted narratives. I stood and watched their numbers dwindle. Soon I was one of only a few prey left for the desperate transportation peddlers. A husky, determined Colombian man … [Read more...]

How to Survive a Trip to the Top of Yosemite’s Half Dome

July 28, 2019 by Kevin Nelson5 Comments

The plastic water bottle skidded off the granite and disappeared. It wasn’t the sound the bottle made that disturbed me. It was the silence that followed its rapid disappearance. Along with twenty to twenty-five other people I was perched on the east face of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, the world-famous granite slab that John Muir called “the most beautiful and most sublime of all the wonderful Yosemite rocks.” We were climbing the … [Read more...]
