BobbiThe rug story is why I hate to shop in third world countries. I grew up in Kenya, one would think I could barter and say NO. But I have an excessively highly developed American guilt complex. SO shopping is excruciating. I ALWAYS get taken. I find especially funny that the salesman asked for little trinkets-down to your very trousers!!! I suppose no matter how poor we may think we are, and how much we swear we can’t afford things, just the cost of our travels and the clothes and accessories we have make us appear colossal liars to these people. Still, I won’t stop traveling-even getting ripped off makes a great tale in the telling of it with a bit of time and perspective.
AdrienneI live in Morocco and I just hate it when people say they have been taken. They buy wonderful craft, handmade and they resent paying a tenth of what they would have to pay in their own country.
Shopping is such a wonderful cultural drama in Morocco. Relax. Stop wanting the best bargain on earth from poor people. Think of the joy your purchase creates for many people. See retail therapy as an unselfish gesture and enjoy!!

I do appreciate the unique things I purchase, my frustration comes with feeling stupid when I pay ten times what the guy after me does because I won’t bargain. And it seems that many people I buy from really like the bargaining game so I spoil that for them. Still, we have so much that it is trivial to complain. After all I can just say no if I don’t like the price right!
