Hideaway Island, Vanuatu – April 2023

Easy to access, only about 15 minutes by mini van from Port Vila this private island is a favorite place to dive or snorkel by locals and visitors. Mini vans may drop passengers off at the driveway to the island or pull in next to the ferry dock (the walk down the driveway from the road is a short one). The ferry operates 24 hours a day and takes about 4 minutes from the mainland to the dock on the island. Alternatively, if the tide is low, one can easily walk to the island along a sandy beach and then along a sandy spit – this leisurly stroll takes about 10-12 minutes.

One can stay on the island – with accommodation ranging from a dorm room to a private villa with a pool. Or one can visit for a shorter period of time; arguably the reason many day trippers come to the island is to visit and send a postcard from the world’s only underwater post office. Located a very short swim from the coral rock covered beach (around 100 feet or so) the roof of this tiny post office is only about 6 feet under water.

One can purchase special waterproof postcards from the nearby gift shop, then dive down to see the inside and place the postcard (which are delivered both domestically and internationally). Usually there are plenty of fish swimming both on the exterior and interior. This post office has been open for business since 2003.

Masks, snorkels and fins can be rented – although from our experience, this equipment is not in the best shape and its better to bring your own gear. Divers can join one of three dives scheduled throughout the day – non divers can also signup for one of the introductory dive courses.

A bar and a restaurant are also conveniently located on the island. For more information visit: www.hideaway.com.vu
