7 Must-Visit Places in Morocco

April 25, 2025 by Angela SavinoLeave a Comment

1. Tangier
Walking through Tangier, you’ll notice the many contrasts this city offers. Tangier is a city that tells a thousand stories, all intertwined between Europe and Africa. With its location marking the meeting point between two continents, the city has fascinated artists, writers, and intellectuals for years. The decadent atmosphere of its alleys and cafes, many of which overlook the sea, will make you feel as if you’re part of a novel. I believe this is one of the stops that should definitely be included in a tour of Morocco. If you pass through, a stop at the historic Café Hafa is essential!
Tangier is also easily accessible thanks to the efficient Moroccan railway system.

2. Rabat
The capital of Morocco, Rabat, is a city that definitely deserves a visit. Quieter and more relaxed compared to other Moroccan cities, it’s the perfect place for those seeking a blend of history and modernity. Among its main attractions are the Kasbah of the Oudayas, an ancient fortress offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, and the Hassan Tower, the symbol of the city. Walking along the waterfront or through the heart of the city, you’ll feel the cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll, away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy cities.

3. Ait Benhaddou
A true hidden gem in the heart of Morocco, Ait Benhaddou is an ancient fortified citadel that looks like it’s straight out of a movie. Its terracotta walls and landscape overlooking the southern mountains will transport you to another era. This village, once a key stop for caravans traveling between Marrakech and the Sahara Desert, has also been the set for famous films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. It’s no wonder that Ait Benhaddou has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you’re planning a trip to Morocco, make sure to add this destination to your list!

4. Volubilis
Getting to Volubilis wasn’t easy, but once there, time seems to stand still. This ancient archaeological site, once a thriving Roman city, will make you feel as if you’ve traveled back 2,000 years. The grandeur of the mosaics, still visible today, is simply incredible. Among the ruins of temples, an aqueduct, and the Capitolium, there’s so much to explore. Every step you take in this place leads you to discover a piece of extraordinary history.

5. Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen is one of the most charming and unique cities in Morocco. Located in the Rif Mountains, this town is famous for its streets and houses painted entirely in blue, creating a surreal and extraordinary atmosphere. Walking through the streets of Chefchaouen is like diving into a dream, with narrow alleys and breathtaking views. If you’re passionate about photography, you’ll definitely find the perfect spot here to take some of your most beautiful photos during the trip because the magic word here is blue!

6. Scenic Road Through the Atlas Mountains
If you think Morocco is only desert, well, my friend, you’re sorely mistaken! The Atlas Mountains were a wonderful discovery for me. Traveling for kilometers by car surrounded by the majestic Atlas Mountains is truly a dream come true. One of the most fascinating experiences is driving along the road from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, passing through the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, which at 2,260 meters is one of the highest in North Africa. The breathtaking views that unfold before you are definitely worth the trip. And if you still crave adventure, you could continue your journey to Tinghir, where the beauty of the natural landscape never ceases to amaze.

7. Trip to the Sahara Desert
A trip to Morocco wouldn’t be complete without an excursion into the legendary Sahara Desert. If you’re short on time, a one-day excursion will still allow you to experience the thrill of walking on the golden dunes for an adventure you’ll never forget. From Merzouga, one of the gateways to the desert, you can enjoy a unique experience: endless sand, a starry sky, and absolute silence. Don’t forget to stop for a night at a desert camp, where you can enjoy a traditional dinner under a sky full of stars.
