The enchanting Croatian region of Istria offers a unique combination of breathtaking nature, rich culture and history, and numerous activities for visitors. This beautiful peninsula on the Croatian Adriatic Sea is known for its picturesque coastline with stunning picture-perfect beaches and crystal clear waters. In addition, the region boasts some of Croatia’s best wine growing areas and a large number of historic towns that have preserved their traditional architecture to this day. When we think of Istria, the famous coastal towns like Rovinj and Pula immediately come to mind. But a vacation in one of Istria’s smaller towns, where you can get to know the region from a different side, is also particularly beautiful.
Here are our 5 recommendations for a short vacation in Istria, off the beaten track:

Hum

One of the most hidden gems is the small town of Hum in the hinterland of enchanting Istria. What makes it so special is that it is considered the smallest town in the world! And indeed, with only 20 to 30 inhabitants, this place is incredibly tiny and well worth a visit. Tucked away in the Istrian hinterland, between deep forests and green valleys, perched on a hill, it is a real insider’s tip in Croatia. When you visit it, you go on a kind of time travel, where you can discover something interesting at almost every corner while strolling through the alleys. Despite its tiny size, Hum has a city wall, a city gate, a cemetery, 2 churches, some houses, and even a fantastic restaurant. Be sure to try the biska, Hum’s famous mistletoe liqueur.

Novigrad

Beautiful Novigrad is the true pearl of Istria and worth a visit or vacation. Guaranteed you will fall in love with this picturesque old town with its inspiring colorful buildings and winding streets. It is a nice experience to walk along the seafront promenade, from where you can admire the magnificent view of the sea. In the city center there are many good restaurants, bars and cafes that offer good cuisine. Those who like swimming in Istria will also find their personal vacation paradise in Novigrad. Bathing bays line the outskirts of the city and promise unforgettable vacations on the Adriatic Sea. Above all, there are many excursion possibilities in the region, so that your Istrian vacation is guaranteed not to be boring.

Labin

The charming town of Labin is located in Istria, a little off the beaten path. If you are looking for very special places in Istria, you will be especially captivated by the charming old town. The narrow, cobblestone streets, which form a veritable labyrinth, invite you to immerse yourself in times gone by. Well-preserved medieval buildings and old churches are worth seeing, art galleries and craft studios invite you to stroll around. The town museum, which brings the mining and cultural history of the region to life, is also worth a visit. The culinary highlights are also top in Labin. Restaurants and konobas offer traditional Istrian dishes, and many establishments even offer a magnificent view of the sea.

Grožnjan

Grožnjan, a charming village in Istria, attracts visitors with a rich cultural scene and breathtaking panorama. Numerous galleries and studios of local and international artists make Grožnjan an important art center of the country. The historical charm of the town is also characterized by the well-preserved medieval architecture of the old town with its narrow streets and stone buildings. But there is more! Thanks to its elevated position, Grožnjan offers spectacular panoramic views of olive groves, vineyards and the Adriatic Sea. Many come especially for a day trip to enjoy delicious Istrian cuisine in local restaurants and taverns. The relaxed and quiet atmosphere makes Grožnjan an ideal retreat for travelers who want to experience the beauty of Istria in all its facets.
