Alicante: An Introduction

July 23, 2008 by Luke DubuisLeave a Comment

Benidorm, Alicante , Spagna 2Located in the south-east of Spain, Alicante is the ideal destination for a family holiday in the sun. With golden sandy beaches, a stunning coastline and palm-lined streets, this city on the Costa Blanca is a little slice of paradise. If you are looking for somewhere new to spend your summer holiday, then Alicante could be just the place you’ve been searching for. Read on for our introductory guide to this stunning Spanish city.

Where is Alicante? Alicante city is the capital of Alicante province, which is home to popular holiday destinations such as Benidorm.

What is there to do in Alicante? The place is bursting with things to see and do besides sipping cocktails and soaking up the sun. Visit El Palmeral, a park complete with waterfalls and lakes – ideal for nature lovers. There are also castles on hilltops waiting to be explored, such as the Castle of Santa Barbara, which overlooks the sea and city. For kids, there’s Aquopolis Torrevieja water park which features slides, waves and plenty of pools for splashing about in. In the meantime, you relax with a book in the sun or even take a dip in the jetted tub.

Where should we stay? If you are travelling in a large group it might be an idea to consider renting out a villa, as this can work out cheaper than a hotel and gives you more flexibility for meal times. Villas are also good for families with children as many have their own private pool. Alternatively, you could consider a family-friendly resort as they often offer children’s clubs with activities for the kids to enjoy.

When should we go? Temperatures can be extreme – sometimes above 30 degrees in July – so this season might be too hot if you are travelling with young children. Alicante is warm all year round, but if you are trying to tie it in with the summer holidays, then you may want to wait until late August. If you are travelling as a couple, avoiding peak season (i.e. mid-summer) can save you money, as the hotels and resorts are in lower demand.

Why should we choose Alicante? The variety of resorts, attractions and child-friendly options makes this the perfect family location, as well as a great place for couples and gangs of friends alike. The cultural and historic buildings make it a perfect retreat for people who enjoy exploring and the long golden beaches are ideal for those who are seeking a relaxing week in the sun.
