The Most Romantic Destinations in Paris

November 15, 2013 by Tyler Thursby2 Comments

Paris, France has long been considered the mecca for romantic destinations across the world. It's clear this starry-eyed reputation is well deserved from the moment you step into the city.  From the charming cobbled stone streets to the beautiful and exceptional cafés, there's a lot to love in this most vibrant part of beautiful France. Although your average romantic is certainly capable of finding plenty of amorous destinations from simply … [Read more...]

Amsterdam’s Top Cultural Attractions

November 15, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

Amsterdam is rapidly regaining its status as a top tourist destination in the world. In the early years of the nineteenth century, Amsterdam was regarded as the top city to visit in Europe, an achievement that the city has been struggling to attain in the past few years. The robust efforts placed by the Government and other private corporations have seen a rise in the number of visitors to this great Dutch city in the past few years. Being … [Read more...]

A Trace of Thrace: Balkan Adventure

November 10, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

In Plovdiv, Bulgaria, John M. Edwards snitches on the mystery-shrouded Balkans’ best-kept secret: an ancient (and enduring) heresy I was on the way slow train from Budapest through the Balkans, on my way to Bulgaria, chainsmoking and guzzling Egri Bikavier (Bull’s Blood) wine, when the train came to a juddering halt and was boarded by heavily armed Serbian soldiers. A Serb with an impressive handlebar moustache and an assault rifle demanded … [Read more...]

What To Do With 24 Hours in Dubrovnik

November 8, 2013 by Jinnat HLeave a Comment

Dubrovnik's dramatic location – nestled between the mountains and the Adriatic Sea – is overshadowed only by the beauty of the medieval walled town at its heart. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and home of the many luxury hotels Croatia now offers, Dubrovnik is the main reason so many tourists are flocking to book their Croatia holidays. If you only have 24 hours here, you need to make them count. 8am: Arrive at Dubrovnik airport. … [Read more...]

St. John’s Tomb: Travel Tales from Turkey

November 6, 2013 by Elizabeth1 Comment

Greetings from Cappadocia! We are rapidly adapting to the troglodyte lifestyle of the modern cave dweller! Cappadocia was a perfect hideaway for the early persecuted Christians because they fled here to hide away in caves and they built their churches in caves as well. It almost appears that every family had its own church, sort of like a second living room to their cave dwelling. These early churches comfortably fit only about 10 people in … [Read more...]

Camino de Santiago, A Million Steps

November 2, 2013 by Kurt KoontzLeave a Comment

A million is a rough estimate of the number of steps I took while walking the Camino de Santiago. I made the calculation on day 13 of my trek as I walked along a portion of the path that was parallel to a highway with kilometer markers. Over the course of a kilometer, I counted 1,153 steps. I did the math and discovered that I would take a total of 909,717 steps on the trail between St. Jean Pied-de-Port, where it began, and Santiago de … [Read more...]

Barcelona’s Best Tapas Bars

October 30, 2013 by Laura JenkinsLeave a Comment

Barcelona is well known for its incredible culinary offers and has really become a foodie’s paradise in recent years. From fresh fish and paellas to delicious meats and stews, Catalan cuisine certainly has something for everyone. What’s very much a la mode however, is ir de tapeo, a chilled out, gastronomic bar crawl where musings are shared over a selection of delicious tapas. But with so many great bars in the city, it’s difficult to know where … [Read more...]

Waltzing through the Kaffehaus Kultura Vienna

October 24, 2013 by John Edwards1 Comment

“The [Café] Central is a place for people who have to kill time, so as not to be killed by it. . . .” --Alfred Polgar “I AM SIGMUND SPIELBERG!!!” The obviously unemployable flaneur with umlaut eyes landed at my marble-topped table without a proper invite, brusquely pushing aside a Thonet wooden chair. Brandishing a copy of Der Spiegel on a wooden rolling pin in his left hand, and reeking from an unfortunate cologne resembling turning … [Read more...]

Kutna Hora and the Chapel of Bones

October 14, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards mispronounces the naughty-sounding destination “Kutna Hora” at a train station in Prague, a surreal stage set straight out of the Quentin Tarantino/Eli Roth shocker “HOSTEL,” set in Slovakia but filmed in the Czech Republic. . . . At Hlavni Nadrazi, Prague’s main train station, the large ugly lady in Aeroflot chic flinched when I ordered a roundtrip to the naughty-sounding “Kutna Hora,” mispronouncing my destination on purpose. … [Read more...]
