Budgeting for your Motorhome Holiday

December 12, 2013 by Stephanie B2 Comments

motorhomeWith many of us dreaming of sunnier and warmer climes this winter, what better time than to start planning your next adventure! Well why not try something different and take a holiday in a motorhome and experience the freedom that comes with it. Unless you already own a motorhome and have purchased the appropriate motorhome insurance cover it is expensive so you should consider hiring.

Depending on what you want to see, do and what country you are visiting there are many ways to save money whilst on a motorhome trip! If you are heading to America for three weeks there is a huge amount to do and probably the most sensible option is to choose a couple of states, hire a motorhome and travel around by road. This way you save money on flights and hotels and you can literally go anywhere you please at any time of the day.

It is a good idea to have some idea of where you want to end up and make sure you have some options to you in terms of which campsites you will be stopping at. In the height of summer campsites become more expensive as spaces often fill up quickly. Make sure you have researched and booked some campsites before you leave so you aren’t paying through the nose for somewhere to park up.

Next thing to consider is food `and drink. This can be as cheap or expensive as you like. There are no rules that say you have to cook every night but if you are travelling on a budget it is the most sensible option. If you are planning on travelling in the UK then you can stock up on everything that you need and refill along the way.

Another great money saver is packing activities to do during the day. If you aren’t heading to a country to see the sights then you may want some other things to do. Taking bikes and scooters with you is great for families.

Another great tip for saving money whilst you are on a motorhome holiday is to talk to the locals. They are likely to know some great places to see and offer some suggestions for some things to do as well as being able to offer advice on where to get the best deals. The power of talking to someone is a little underestimated on holiday but who knows you might discover something that you just can’t find in a book.

Overall planning is vital when it comes to budgeting. To get the most out of your holiday it is important to know where you are going and what you want to do. Motorhome holidays are great fun especially if you are sightseeing as you have a lot of freedom without worrying about check in and checkout times and making sure you get down to breakfast before the buffet is cleared away!

I’ve seriously considered doing this. It seems a lot easier than having to deal with flights, car rentals, luggage allowance and TSA.

Yes, and it is ideal in places like Australia and New Zealand!
