Usually you don’t plan on getting bitten by a rattlesnake for example. It’s just one of those things when you’re out in desolate country; alone, weather beaten and emotionally off guard. Of course you could argue that inserting yourself into desolate and dangerous country is, in a way, inviting an encounter with an ill-tempered reptile. True I didn’t know when setting out on my two-month canoe trip that I had a date with a Prairie Rattler a thousand miles downriver, but […]

Land embraces lagoon like a protective parent. Water shines like a molten blending of sapphires and emeralds. The perpetually cloudless sky appears hazy against such brilliance. Craggy islets guard the entrance like dorsal spines on some mythic leviathan. But you walk the Malta of the modern world, a Mediterranean archipelago where prehistoric temples, safely preserved within the womb of nature for millennia, are being eroded in […]

Mr. Purdie and the fireplace are flanked by two doors of the same teal-green as the rectangular room’s wainscoting and window frames; they stand out against the cream-colored upper walls. The golden slats of the wooden floor give slightly underfoot. I love this room. Restored in the 1930s, the Raleigh Tavern at Colonial Williamsburg represents the heart of what pulls me three hours southward from my home in northern […]

It is a land of stark contrasts and great natural extremes. It is the largest national park in the lower 48 states and as a national park, only dates from 1994. Synonymous with California – a small part of the park is actually in the state of Nevada. Death Valley National Park is 3.4 million acres – as a result visitors need at least 3-4 days to get a “feel” for the park and to visit and experience the majority of […]

The campus of the University of Montana (Grizzlies) is located just off of the 90 freeway on the east side of town at the mouth of the Hell Gate Canyon.
