Indonesia: Hello Mister!

July 3, 2013 by Tiffany Soukup11 Comments

The motion sensor detects my presence and two glass doors slide open to grant me entry into the Woolworth's Supermarket. I grab a trolly (shopping cart) and peruse the isles pausing to examine labels at my will. Although I have been shopping for decades, this time feels a little different. To my right a woman in pink track shorts excuses herself to reach across and grab the peanut butter. A mother wheels by with a small girl strapped in the … [Read more...]

Jamaica’s Coolest Joint

July 3, 2013 by Geren LockhartLeave a Comment

JAMAICA – Last Christmas I realized I needed a little sun. I regretted missing two invitations to go to Jamaica — here was my chance! I enlisted one of my best friends to share in the adventure. We chose Negril, the beach resort for locals on the island (it's their Malibu or Montauk). Negril used to be a hippie enclave and has slowly evolved into a boho jet-set destination with great Chris Blackwell hotels and restaurants — my music video … [Read more...]

Pencils In The Land Of Flowers

July 3, 2013 by Adrian LandinLeave a Comment

Adrian buying pencils for the kids from the local shop in the fishing village

After hopping off our motorbikes we made our way down the dirt road leading up to the ocean. With the mid-afternoon sun blazing, the smell of yesterday's drying fish was stout. As we passed by the makeshift shops and shacks, we captured the local women's attentiond. They were all seated upon dusty edges raised above the junky, polluted streets (every other one with a newborn plugged into one of her breasts) and quietly began whispering. Stopping … [Read more...]

A rickshaw driving through an intersection in Kathmandu, Nepal

We'd been in Nepal's bustling capital city less than 24 hours. In what has become routine upon arriving in a new city, I was up around sunrise eager to wander out and explore the streets of a place that's been a dream of mine for over a decade. Like every other SE Asian country's capital, Kathmandu's streets are chaotic. Chaotic, I said. The roads are awful. Resembling heavily bombed strips of concrete, the streets are extremely fractured and … [Read more...]

How Voluntary Work Can Change Your Life and Travelling

July 1, 2013 by Adam BullerLeave a Comment

There are as many different ways of seeing the world as there are people keen to pack a bag and head off to explore distant shores. However, how many of these ways end in a lasting benefit to both the traveller and the place they spend time in? Wouldn’t it be great if we could enjoy travelling the planet while leaving learning something valuable as well? I discovered that this is possible when I went to do voluntary work in the rainforest in … [Read more...]

Capital of Ghosts

June 30, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

What was Parisian-Style Boulevards, Empty Eight-Lane Highways, and Chistendom's Highest Chuch-All Dead Ending in Jungle? I was working for a magazine in Abidjan, the principal city of Cote d’Ivoire (better known as the Ivory Coast), when some co-workers and I set off on a pilgrimage to one of the strangest ghost towns in Africa: Yamoussoukro. The official capital of the country since 1983, this modern “lost city” is the architectural … [Read more...]

A Romp in the South of France – Day 1: Bordeaux – St. Emilion

June 19, 2013 by Tim HorganLeave a Comment

Backpack strapped on and ready to move, I marched onward and outward of the Youth Hostel, away from comfort; a comfort, to be fair, that had held me back, that had repressed my inner flame for too long. Yes I was over it, over these post-University blues, over this lack of motivation I constantly felt. I mean for God’s sake, I was travelling! And ten months had gone by. Now don’t get me wrong, I had done some awesome stuff and lived ten months of … [Read more...]

Road trip through France & Spain in a campervan

June 14, 2013 by Vincent ClementLeave a Comment

Our adventure started in France - we were so excited. Our road trip was planned; it would be our first adventure together. It happened so quickly - at the beginning of last summer. My girlfriend and I booked a campervan equipped by Campy Camper, in Biarritz, France for one week. We both had been dreaming of travelling this way for a long time - in fact ever since we read "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac... So we took a train to Paris (where we live) … [Read more...]

One girl’s adventures in the Valle de las Batuecas

June 9, 2013 by Anna PearceLeave a Comment

I don't have a great track record with my attempts to visit prehistoric paintings.  All my other travel plans seem to work out just fine, but not this one.  My attempt to visit the Lascaux cave paintings in the Vezere Valley in France failed when I discovered that the Lascaux caves are not in fact in Lascaux, the tiny mist-shrouded village I was standing in, but are in fact over half an hour's drive away.  Meaning on this particular occasion, I … [Read more...]
