Angkor Wat, Cambodia – Other Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Angkor Zoo is located off a dirt road (on the way to Angkor its just past the ticket gates) off of Charles De Gaulle Blvd. Approximate time here to see all the animals is about 30 to 40 minutes. Its a fairly small zoo with a great variety of birds and reptiles - over 100 species of animals are represented. The highlight are the bears and the cheetahs. A small dirty swimming pool is available for use - although I only saw children using it. Price … [Read more...]

Angkor Wat, Cambodia – Lodging

by Dave · Leave a Comment

There is a very wide range of lodging options in Siem Reap ranging from cheap bottom of the barrel accommodations, to guest homes, to fancy resorts which are of course priced much higher. A room with air conditioning will cost a few dollars more then one without. Despite the many guest homes and other lodging options, there are still many more being built. Most of the guesthouses will accept major credit cards, i.e. Visa, Mastercard. Many of … [Read more...]

Angkor Wat, Cambodia – Restaurants

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Overall I found the Cambodian food in Siem Reap to be a little greasy and not very flavorful, and certainly not spicy like some Thai food. There are many many cheap places to eat in Siem Reap - a good number of them serving both Khmer food and western style food - you will find the Khmer food is usually cheaper than the Western food. Prices often range from $1/meal to several dollars. Many of the tourist restaurants are located around the old … [Read more...]

Angkor Wat, Cambodia – More Information

Banks - There are several banks in Siem Reap with International ATM's throughout town. How things have changed in a few years! All the banks are located near the center of town most around the Old Market. Guides - The small free magazine called The Angkor Guide is published once every 6 months and is a must have for tourists. It is more up to date than most guidebooks and tourist publications and it is available at many of the guest homes … [Read more...]

Union Creek Resort, Oregon – September 2003

September 1, 2003 by DaveLeave a Comment

Union Creek Resort Oregon - Located only 23 miles from Crater Lake, America's deepest lake, this resort offers solitude and serenity for those wanting a place to "escape". Choose from rooms in the Lodge or the Cabins. A store, cafe and ice cream shop are all on the premises. This is the gateway to hiking, fishing, swimming and a multitude of other outdoor activities. The hotel itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and used … [Read more...]

Visit Corvallis OR – August 2003

August 1, 2003 by DaveLeave a Comment

Corvallis, Oregon is a small college town of about 50,000 full time residents. Located only about a 90 minute drive south of Portland - in the western part of the state. Home to Oregon State University (the Beavers) - a college that produced the graduate who invented the mouse for the computer - also where Hewlett-Packard's inkjet printing process was developed. Geographically the town sits in the coastal foothills - and is surrounded by … [Read more...]

Vientiane, Laos

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Vientiane, set along the meandering Mekong River, is the very laid back peaceful capital city of Laos. This city is in stark contrast to the chaotic bustling streets of Bangkok or select other South East Asian cities! Vientiane is small enough that its not an overwhelming city (population 135,000) and you can find your way around quite easily. If you do get lost, there is usually a Tuk-tuk eagerly waiting to whisk you away to your destination. … [Read more...]

Vientiane, Laos – Activities & Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Dong Dok University is located several miles north of Vientiane and is a great place to meet Lao students. Often these students are interested in practicing foreign languages with tourists. Internet cafes are mentioned here because this USED to be an activity in and of itself! Back in the day, this city had the most internet cafe's of any city I had ever been to. These used to be predominantly located in the center of town and along Thanon Fa … [Read more...]

Vientiane, Laos – Food

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For under several dollars or euros one can get a typical Lao meal from one of the many street side restaurants. Many of these restaurants serve several different varieties of soups - most of these restaurants have either street side seating or seating set back in the restaurant (usually just one room). Typically the soups will consist of some meat and some type of sprouts, mint, and other greens. Usually the soups are not spicy - the spices … [Read more...]

Vientiane, Laos – Lodging

by Dave · Leave a Comment

There are many guesthouses and inexpensive hotels to stay at in Vientiane. Vientiane is small enough in that it is fairly easy to walk around looking for lodging (if you do not have pre-arranged accommodations). Tuk-tuk drivers are found all over town - and for a few thousand kip will take you across town. Be sure to bargain with these drivers - in my experience they always initially offer a very high price. Hayasoke Guest House is a … [Read more...]
