Top 3 Favorite Trips & One Bad One!

August 5, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Time spent using public transportation are good opportunities to reflect on previous travels. One does not always get to do this; when you are addicted to travel you are often thinking about your next trip even during your current trip. I came up with a list of my top 3 favorite trips and the one "trip from hell". #1 Trip to Nepal I took in 1996 - this trip really turned me on to International travel and the hardships I personally faced … [Read more...]

Travel Life List

July 25, 2010 by Dave5 Comments

I was recently stuck in the Miami airport for 5 dreaded hours (not because of the particular airport, but because I hate long connection times) and I was talking to Maggie who runs Mighty Girl and maintains her own Life List. We were discussing top 10 life experience lists based on experts in their fields. My focus would be on travel of course; here is my top 10 list in no particular order. Perspective. This is a word that defines travel. … [Read more...]

Niemann-Pick Type C is a rare disease that affects only 500 known children worldwide with more still un diagnosed. Two of my cousin's children have this disease, it is currently terminal but research is being quickly worked on and there is hope for treatment and eventually a cure. This family has joined with other families and started their own foundation, Hadley-Hope - please watch this video: For more information about this terrible … [Read more...]

Jamaica works her Magic!

July 22, 2010 by Dave1 Comment

Ingredients: Good People, Outdoor Adventure, Romance, Black Eyed Peas and a bit of Jamaican Rum (perhaps more than a bit)! We've heard that Jamaica has the most churches per capita and also the most Rum Bars - you can even find Rum bars at Churches - as well as on boats. This catamaran is no exception - they have a well-stocked mini bar. If there ever was an LA song, it is "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas, but we will always remember … [Read more...]

Death Valley’s Heat Window opens

July 21, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

We are in that window again, the one time per year where you have a shot at experiencing the most extreme temperatures Death Valley has to offer. Typically years after higher rainfalls see the hottest temperatures in the valley. However this year has been disappointingly cold in the valley - below 110 for a few days, in mid July - whats UP? We are backed up on upcoming trips but we are trying to squeeze a camping trip to Furnace Creek sometime … [Read more...]

Festival of Fruit 2010, Los Angeles Chapter

July 20, 2010 by Dave1 Comment

I am a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers Society and have been off an on since college. This is a great organization that promotes and educates the public about growing tropical fruit, gardening and other outdoor activities related to agriculture. There are a number of regional chapters in the state, all of whom hold regular meetings. Every year there is a Festival of Fruit which rotates among the states' chapters. This year the … [Read more...]

We had a full day of touring in the Montego Bay region of Jamaica - highlights included exploring the rest of Secrets Wild Orchid Resort, Chukka Caribbean Adventures (high speed Dog Sled Ride), and the Ocho Rios (a fantastic water soaking climb up the steep river walls from the ocean into the rainforest). See some of our photos below: … [Read more...]

The Secret is Out!

July 16, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

I'm currently staying at Secret's Wild Orchid Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica on a trip sponsored by the Tourism Bureau of Jamaica. This resort is completely new having only opened about 2.5 months ago. I have been totally transported in a matter of hours to a magical paradise on the island of Jamaica. We hit the Barracuda bar for a tropical drink which was then carried steps away to the beach where our buffet dinner was awaiting under … [Read more...]
