Jumping into the saddle he … [Read more...]

Playing the Points Game: A Beginner’s Thoughts

My youngest son is about to fly the coop and start college, joining his older brother in the fall at San Diego State. This means that my wife and I are about to become empty nesters, giving us the chance to fly the coop ourselves and travel more. With this looming rebirth of freedom, I am beginning to look into the wonderful (and complicated!) game of acquiring points as a means of knocking down the costs of airfare, lodging, restaurants, and … [Read more...]

10 Inspirational Travel Instagram Accounts Worth Following

This wonderful planet features a diversity of inspirational and beautiful places. Some travelers have been able to create careers out of exploring a range of often niche experiences or locations. For them, travel is a passion and certainly a huge part of their lifestyles. At 1,400 miles long, the Alaska Highway, also known as the ALCAN, traverses some of the most inhospitable and least-populated parts of Canada and the United States. Finding Inspiration (and lots of fish) at Waterfall Resort, Alaska

52-acres of wilderness await guests at Waterfall Resort - a private fishing lodge located on Prince of Wales Island near Alaska's Inside Passage. Seasonal runs of large numbers of fish pass through here including wild king and silver salmon, various size halibut (and this fish can easily get over 100 pounds), lingcod and numerous other types of fish. The site of the resort was once a thriving cannery - founded in 1912 and operating through the … [Read more...]

Catching Fish and Memories at Waterfall Resort, Alaska

Catching Fish and Memories at Waterfall Resort, Alaska

On an unusually clear day in Southeast Alaska, I find myself peering out the window of a float plane several thousand feet above a swath of wilderness alternating between dense forest and sparkling dark blue lakes. Our pilot was in shorts and a t shirt displaying a prominent skull decked out in a red bandanna framed by the 'cross hairs' of a propeller. I was with a group of journalists on a plane operated by Pirate Airworks. Our departure city … [Read more...]

Visiting Ketchikan, Alaska

Visiting Ketchikan, Alaska

For a tiny town, Ketchikan is full of big experiences. Self titled as one of the rain capitals of the country, they average some 13 feet of rain a year, otherwise known as liquid sunshine! One can normally expect to get wet regardless of the time of year visiting. However, remarkably during our two days in town, we had bright blue sunny skies the entire time. When we told people who had been here before and showed them photographs to prove … [Read more...]
