If you want to walk in the desert by yourself I would certainly choose a cool time of the year – in the Summer, the Sahara can be as brutal as Death Valley California but much larger and more remote. When I was in Morocco there were many guides to choose from for guided desert trips – including Camel Safaris.
What country are you thinking of doing this in?

Looks like you guys have put together a very comprehensive California wine guide. Keep up the good work.

Chile is nice – especially in the summer which sounds like when you will be there (Jan & Feb) – if you go, head to the Patagonian south region. One country I highly recommend is Argentina – great food, affordable, and lots to see. Buenos Aires is very European and Mendoza is also quite nice – sitting in the shadow of the high Andes.
Also if you need any recommendations about what to see and do in Peru – I’ve been there a number of times.

Dave
You also might want to check with your credit card companies – sometimes they have an insurance add on which can be quite affordable. I know American Express has something like this which includes emergency evacuation coverage for when you are abroad.

Hi Jaime – greetings from Argentina. Where are you based in California. CA is also home base for me when I´m not on the road.

Be sure to visit Laos, Cambodia (Angkor Wat), Vietnam – both the north and south, Philippines, and of course Thailand. If you have any specific questions about any of those countries let me now.
Will you be visiting Indonesia¿ – I´ll be there later this year and am looking forward to that trip.

Dave
Thanks for the post – I´ve also been to Peru a number of times and have traveled throughout this amazing country. I´ll be back in a week or so to do some trekking in the Cordillera Huayuash region.
If you have any questions about Peru, also feel free to post here or email me.

Dave
Whereabouts are you going in East Africa – I spent 6 weeks there a few years ago. Let me know how South Africa is – Its on the radar for next year during an extended trip I will be taking.

I have a contact in the travel industry who runs this site – it is a good source of info for hotels/guesthouses in Samui:
If you go to Krabi – ask for the Irish Pub run by Erin Jook – there are some good hotels right near her pub – one of which I stayed at several years back.
