Koh Mak Seafood, Koh Mak Thailand – February 2024

We’ve been fortunate to have eaten at this restaurant multiple times over multiple trips to Koh Lak. Every time we come to this island we dream of the food here for several week before our arrival. Arguably the best restaurant on the island. Both the quality of the seafood and the gentle ambiance make for a memorable meal. Located next to a small bay the restaurant extends over the water with several dining spaces. The most coveted tables are those right next to the wooden railings directly overlooking the bay. Diners are a mix of Thai and western tourists. Couples take note, this is a very romantic spot.

The diversity of seafood dishes offered is great – offers one of the best Goong chae nam pla dishes we have ever had in Thailand (raw shrimp with garlic, bitter melon, diced cabbage and several delicious dipping sauces. Prefer your shrimp to have some color on them? Order the tasty grilled giant prawns. The local steamed fish with chili pepper, lime and garlic also highly recommended. A number of salads are also house specialties including the seafood salad. Excellent larb moo (pork salad). And complement your meal with a fresh mango shake. Finish your meal (if you still have an appetite) with either home-made coconut ice cream or mango sticky rice (the mangoes used are always fresh and very sweet). Stagger out of here barely able to walk.

Koh Mak Seafood was founded in 2006 along with a small museum highlighting some of the history of the island (free admission, located to the right of the entrance) and the Smile Koh Mak Cooking School located next door. The old houses on site date from 1920. Very friendly staff, also eco-friendly. We love the use of metal straws instead of plastic or paper.

Guests staying on the island usually arrive via rented motorbikes but guesthouses can also arrange a taxi ride here and the restaurant can arrange a taxi ride return after your meal. The young female staff generally speaks good English. Perhaps a bit higher priced then other area restaurants but no complaints here based on the quality of food and overall ambiance. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
