Old Town Vilnius Lithuania – November 2019

November 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

It is easy to show up to a city and give it the cursory glances, walking down the main touristy streets and window shopping. However to understand a city, one should explore - visit the off the beaten path allyways and seek out the local hangouts. Old Vilnius has plenty of history and character from its Orthodox churches, to unique neighborhoods, bars and artisan stores. One needs a few days to fully explore this part of town. Highlights … [Read more...]

Tortola, British Virgin Islands – October 2019

October 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

About an hour's ferry ride from Charlotte Amalie is Tortola, an island in the British Virgin Islands. If you make this crossing, bring your passport - you will need it to enter the country (which is a fairly smooth quick process). You disembark in Road Town - a colorful community (largest on the island) originally perched on the edges of the steep hillsides which drop down into the water. However, much of the town is now situated on what was the … [Read more...]

Half Moon Cay (Little San Salvador Island), Bahamas – September 2019

September 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

This private island in the Bahamas is surrounded by stunning and usually clear aqua marine waters. Part of the intrigue of visiting the island is it is typically only accessible via cruise ship - from Holland America Line or Carnival Cruises. The island is owned by Carnival Corporation. Other than a small area containing shops near where the tender ships come ashore much of the island remains in a natural state. However for passengers on board … [Read more...]

Las Terrenas & Vicinity, Dominican Republic – August 2019

August 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

The small town of Las Terrenas sits on the edge of the northern part of the country on the Semana Peninsula. Arguably some of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic are located here. The town itself is busy with lots of little shops and services and makes a good stop for food. You don't want to spend much time in town - rather head north to the beaches. Lodging, food, and a number of water activity shops are spread out along the … [Read more...]

Guinness Storehouse Dublin – June 2019

June 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

Guinness Storehouse is a large complex of buildings located at St James's Gate in Dublin Ireland. Guinness has truly developed a cult-like following over the years - since it's founding in 1759. A visit here will immediately clarify this - even during a recent visit on a weekday somewhat off season the storehouse was super crowded with visitors. A visit here is like a walk back in time to another era of old austere looking brick factory … [Read more...]

Belfast RMS Titanic Museum – May 2019

May 1, 2019 by Dave3 Comments

This museum opened in early 2012 and is the world's most comprehensive collection and galleries of everything relating to this once great ship. Galleries focus on pre Titanic industry in Belfast, designing the ship, building it, sailing, the great disaster upon hitting the iceberg, survivors and the aftermath. A short physical ride takes you through what the ship looked like during it's construction with narration from "workers" on various parts … [Read more...]

Lombrives Cave – April 2019

April 1, 2019 by Dave2 Comments

This is Europe's largest and longest open to the public cave system (a fact validated by the Guinness Book of World Records). The cave itself is located on the side of a small road with a non descript sign - it is easy to miss. Address: 09400 Ussat - across the road that runs parallel in this area to the L'Ariege River - about 90km from Toulouse and 50 km from the country of Andorra. A number of tours are offered each day - our visit coincided … [Read more...]

Sandy Island, Anguilla – February 2019

February 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

This tiny strip of sand is a getaway from your getaway! The island features merely 0.6 of an acre of silky smooth white sand in an elongated shape tinged with the occasional colorful umbrella and the obligatory white beach chairs. From Sandy Ground Wharf it is only about a 12 minute power boat ride to the island. Once you arrive, you will be treated to a small restaurant that stays busy serving a variety of tropical drinks including some … [Read more...]
