Cross-country drives are a pastime that is fast going extinct, probably due to the lack of WiFi on some stretches of the countryside!su
If you are planning a road trip, the idea may seem fun at first, but if you have young children or are traveling as part of a group, you will likely want to include some of the following activities to help everyone stay focused and engaged.
Internet Gaming
OK, forget what was said about WiFi earlier! Many online games can be played without WiFi. If you have a smartphone, an iPad, or a tablet, having them to hand on a cross-country trip will reduce stress and keep everyone entertained. For younger kids, the Duck, Duck, Moose app is fun, educational, and helps kids learn about different vehicles; ideal if that’s all they can see out the window!
If you are traveling with adults, why not try your luck with adult-themed iGaming, such as having a flutter with a website like Grizzly’s Quest? You don’t have to blow your trip spending money to have fun on that site, and you could even come away with some more cash to spend when you arrive at your destination.
Plan Stops (scenic ones!)
Unfortunately, if you are driving in winter, this is less likely to be a feasible idea. However, if you are planning a cross-country road trip in the spring or summer, then pulling over to break the trip up will allow you to take in the scenery and relax for a bit.
Driving for long periods (over five hours) can be exhausting, and it is well known that sustained periods of driving can increase the chance of fatigue-related accidents. Schedule in some breaks, laugh with your travel companions, and simply enjoy your time away from technology.
Take Photos
A core part of planning a long road trip with friends and family is going to involve taking photos. So, rather than only taking photos at each stop, why not make photos a core part of the trip?
Depending on which route you are driving, there can be hundreds of places to pull over and take a picture (weather permitting!). This can make a great memento of the journey and the views.
Foodie Stops
However long your planned journey, it’s always a good idea to pack snacks for the trip. In addition, it’s worth keeping in mind that in the US and even in parts of Europe, on routes here people tend to undertake long drives, there are multiple burger shops and other food stops to help everyone stay focused on the road and to appease hunger.
So, if you are cruising for over 12 hours, why not make a few food stops? This can be a fun way to choose where you eat (rather than having to pull over when you get “hangry”) and, with some of the aforementioned photos, can be a fun way to commemorate this part of the trip. Plus, it will help to break up the driving spells and give you something to look forward to.
