Monaco is small, flashy and absolutely packed with things to see. One minute you’re looking at supercars worth more than a house, the next you’re wandering through old streets or gazing at yachts that look bigger than your local supermarket. And there’s a casino or two if you fancy a bit of gaming along the way.
The good news? You don’t need a massive budget to enjoy yourself. Plenty of Monaco’s best sights are free, so you can soak up the atmosphere without spending a fortune.
Monte Carlo and its famous casino
Let’s start with the obvious one. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is pretty hard to miss, and even if gambling isn’t your thing, it’s worth stopping by. The building looks like something straight out of a movie, with grand staircases, fancy decorations and all the old-school glamour you’d expect.
Outside, Casino Square is almost as entertaining. People turn up to admire the cars, take photos and have a good nose around. You might spot a Ferrari or Lamborghini pulling up while you’re having a coffee. Just another day in Monte Carlo, apparently!
Fancy a game? Inside, you’ll find classics such as roulette and blackjack. Casino Café de Paris, just across the square, is another option, particularly if you prefer slot machines.
If you’re new to casino gaming, this venue is perfect to discover what is the best casino game for you whilst trying a few different options at your own pace. Set a spending limit first, though. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re surrounded by all that glamour.
Take a wander through the Old Town
Enough of the expensive cars. Head up to Monaco-Ville, where things get a bit quieter and the streets have plenty of character. You’ll find little shops, cafés and narrow lanes that are great for a wander without much of a plan.
The Prince’s Palace is the big attraction here. It’s still home to Monaco’s ruling family, and the Changing of the Guard at 11:55 am is worth catching if you’re around. Get there a little early if you want a decent view.
The cathedral is nearby, and there are lovely views across the harbour. Take your time. This part of Monaco is less about rushing from one attraction to the next and more about enjoying the place.
Sharks, gardens and sea views
Fancy something a bit different? The Oceanographic Museum sits right on the cliffside and is well worth a visit. There are aquariums, marine exhibits and plenty of sea life to keep you occupied. The building itself is impressive, too.
Once you’ve finished inside, have a wander through the nearby Saint-Martin Gardens. They’re a lovely spot for a breather, with paths, greenery and views over the Mediterranean.
Finish with the harbour and beach
Port Hercule is the place to go if you want another look at those enormous yachts. Grab a drink, find somewhere to sit and watch the comings and goings. You can spend ages here without doing very much at all.
If the weather’s playing along, carry on to Larvotto Beach where you can kick off your shoes, dip your toes in the sea or just go back to sitting for a while.
Then head back towards Monte Carlo for dinner and an evening stroll. The casino square looks even better after dark, and there’s plenty going on.
Monaco might be famous for its money, but you don’t have to be rich to enjoy it. See the sights, have a wander, enjoy the sea air and perhaps try a game or two. That’s a pretty good day out, whichever way you look at it.
