Top 5 Things to Do in Athens with Teletext Holidays

April 12, 2023 by Ricky DurranceLeave a Comment

Athens is a city steeped in history and has been attracting tourists for centuries. With so many incredible sights to see and things to do, it can be difficult to decide where to start when on Greece holidays.

So, let’s explore what we consider to be the top 5 things to do in Athens, from visiting the ancient citadel of the Acropolis to experiencing the incredible Panathenaic Stadium.

The Acropolis
One of the top activities to enjoy in Athens is a visit to the Acropolis, often referred to as the High City. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and recipient of the European Heritage Award, the Acropolis boasts a rich history. Constructed between 467 B.C. and 406 B.C., this remarkable site is nestled in the oldest part of Athens, atop a breath-taking 500-foot-high rock. This must-see attraction is consistently bustling with visitors, regardless of the time of year.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus
This is of the oldest open-air theatres in the world. This impressive ancient theatre was built way back in 161 AD underneath the Acropolis by Herodes Atticus, which he had erected honouring his wife. In total, the theatre can hold over 5000 spectators, and events have been held every year again since the 1930s. This legendary theatre has had some of the best artists perform here, such as Luciano Pavarotti, Margot Fonteyn, Liza Minnelli and many more.

Monastiraki Square
Monastiraki Square is one of the most magnificent things to visit whilst in Athens. The square can be found in the centre of the old town and is a popular meeting place for tourists as well as locals. Around the square are some of the city’s best attractions, such as the Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library, the Ancient Agora, and the square’s famous Flea Market. The square also boasts many family-run tavernas, restaurants and cafés.

The Roman Agora
Right in the centre of the city, you will find the Roman Agora, an alluring historical sight that should be visited by all that visit Athens. Emperor Augustus built this amazing site in the 1st century and was the city’s major market and meeting point at the time. There are many attractions located in and around this historical sight, such as the Gate of Athena Archegetis with the four Doric columns, and the Tower of the Winds.

The Panathenaic Stadium
The Panathenaic Stadium is one of the most visited sights in Athens and is also known as Kallimarmaro, meaning beautiful marble. This historic Olympic stadium with a capacity of 50,000 was opened in 1896 and is the first of the Olympic Games in modern times. Even today some sporting events and concerts take place here.

Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking to explore a new city, Athens has something for everyone! At Teletext Holidays, we’ve got you covered.
