Beyond its renown as “ski capital of the east" surrounded by wide open meadows and working farms nestled among rolling mountains that rise up in every direction, this region is the epicenter of VT craft food producers ranging from household names like Cabot and Ben & Jerry's to local favorites like Cold Hollow Cider Mill and Vermont … [Read more...]

Why do I Climb Mountains?

April 1, 2020 by Dave11 Comments

For years I have wondered why I am obsessed about climbing mountains and being at high altitude. It has been difficult to answer. The obvious reason and it is very true, is the stunning visual beauty. But beyond that I never had an answer. And logically it makes no sense. All the hardships. The suffering from altitude sickness. And there has been loads of this over the years. And the ever present danger. One time we were high up on Rainier - … [Read more...]

Brazilian Cachaça Trip–Rio Grande do Sul, Day One (cont.): Weber Haus

March 29, 2020 by Peter BanksLeave a Comment

Weber Haus is an increasingly big name in the cachaça community. It’s one of the few so-called artisanal cachaças that I can find at supermarkets such as Pão de Açúcar. With a burgeoning reputation, I was excited, that first day of travel, to visit the distillery to learn more about where they came from, where they are currently, and where they see themselves going in the near future. The parking lot was empty in the middle of the afternoon. … [Read more...]

Dancing in the Dark on Greece’s Skopelos Island

March 26, 2020 by Marilyn YungLeave a Comment

A slice of local life on Skopelos Island Last June, my husband and I spent three wonderful weeks on Skopelos Island in Greece, the largest island of the Sporades chain east of the mainland. One evening, after a dinner down by the Skopelos town harbor at Στου Δημητράκη (where we dined on giouvetsi, mousaka and ekmek, by the way), we ventured back up the hill around to the City School to watch a night of traditional dancing. The show started at … [Read more...]

Cachaça Trip, Day One, Part One—Brasilia, Porto Alegre, Ivoti

March 23, 2020 by Peter BanksLeave a Comment

I awoke as the orange rays of the sun bled through my bedroom window. Nerves always eat at me before I travel, and so it wasn’t surprising for me to rise early. Day one of my cachaça trip. There were so many unknowns. I shuffled around my apartment, ensuring my belongings were together, made my coffee, and ate a bit of breakfast. By the time that was done, my wife and kids were up. Besides being a travel day, it also happened to be my kids’ … [Read more...]
