The Faces of Mardi Gras – Biloxi, Mississippi

February 27, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

There is nothing like throwing thousands of beads to thousands of people. On the simplest level - Mardi Gras is all about the beads! I just returned from an International trip and headed to Biloxi Mississippi for their annual Mardi Gras parade. No rest for the weary! … [Read more...]

Giant Prawns & Birthdays

February 25, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Syy got up at 330am this morning to drive an hour to pick up some huge prawns from local farmers. The government provides the baby prawns and then these farmers raise the prawns until they are full grown. The "prawn" market is only in a certain town and each farmer apparently only has a limited supply. Oh and for some reason the market is only open in the wee hours of the morning! Anyway, tonight we celebrated several family birthdays by … [Read more...]

Escaping the Monotony! Solo traveling in Vietnam

February 24, 2012 by Mithila Jariwala1 Comment

Being an aggressively passionate traveler, I have a very low tolerance for mechanical life that comes along with the working environment. This leads to frustration with a need to elope, to explore a new destination. I decided to take a few days off and chose to fly to Hanoi. I was both, backpacking solo and traveling to Vietnam for the first time. With great excitement I landed in Hanoi. Hanoi is full of life and to me it came across … [Read more...]

Back to Thailand

February 23, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

We landed back in our home base of Thailand after an amazing time in Africa - enjoying such a variety of activities and experiences that only this continent can deliver. This was in my top 5 best trips taken so far. My heart is still in Africa while my body is in Thailand enjoying the Thai spices of life which include the food and the 5+ hour spa's in Bangkok. We arrived back in Bangkok mid day from Ethiopia. Lucky we had our yellow fever cards … [Read more...]

A man named Bottles and a dog named Egg, Jet Boating on the Zambezi

February 23, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

In the late 1990's a "kiwi" named Bottles was traveling overland through Africa and came across the Zambezi River. He never left. Today Bottles runs Jet Extreme, a totally self made business which caters to adventurers looking to experience the fast moving Zambezi River in an even faster way - on a jet boat. We rolled out in Bottles' canopy covered people mover - through the Mukuni Village where the well educated chief used to run marketing … [Read more...]

A Perfect Day in Santa Fe

February 22, 2012 by Juliet White, The Lost BackpackLeave a Comment

When people think of Santa Fe, they usually conjure up images of adobe buildings or art. While art and architecture are intrinsic parts of Santa Fe's identity, there's a whole lot more going on in the City Different. Unofficially, we're the funny bumper sticker capital of America. The city is also extremely old, as Santa Fe was founded thirteen years before the Pilgrims made it to Plymouth Rock. If you only have one day to visit, here's how to … [Read more...]

Lisbon – the best summer and winter holiday destination

February 21, 2012 by Hans BeltranLeave a Comment

Apart of being the capital of Portugal, Lisbon is the largest city in the country. Visiting Lisbon is a second to none experience, even if you do not have a clear sightseeing plan to follow, the city will take you around its beautiful churches, palaces, historical streets, monuments and fantastic cultural places, including its rich museums; not even mentioning its seven breathtaking hills that adorn the city as a crown on the head of a … [Read more...]

We are in Namibia!

February 21, 2012 by Dave2 Comments

I have acquired a Namibian souvenir in the form of a haircut or perhaps, lack of hair. That is what I get for going into an African barber - leave with a totally shaved head - most of the people here have very short hair. So now I fit in well. We are in the Caprivi Strip - a narrow band of the country bordered by Angola, Zambia and Botswana. It has a convoluted history - at times under Italian, German and South African control. Namibia became … [Read more...]
