The Selous Safari Company’s ethos centres on the fact that the future of Africa’s wild places ultimately lies in the hands of those dwelling alongside its fragile ecosystems. It is believed the best way to support the camps’ neighbouring villages and their communities is by empowering certain individuals with the necessary skills, which will enable them to further empower the community at large.

For this reason, Jongomero Camp in the remote Ruaha National Park helps supply the Makifu Primary School and a local secondary school with uniforms and exercise books. In addition, this year the camp has provided the Makifu Primary School with much needed desks for its classroom – it is now the first school in the Iringa district to provide enough seating for each of its students! The school has also been given new flooring and had a lick of fresh paint.

While at the beach retreat of Ras Kutani, The Selous Safari Company has “adopted” Gomvu School in an effort to improve the general quality of education in the local community. And as a result, the school will gladly welcome camp guests for a visit during school hours. In addition, Ras Kutani has donated the funds to build a brand-new well which has just been finished, enabling both the local school and the medical clinic, as well as the whole village to access clean, safe water.

During their stay, guests are actively encouraged to ask questions, visit (where possible) and, if inclined, donate to the camps’ causes. For those looking for a more hands-on approach, The Selous Safari Company also works with Pack For A Purpose ( www.packforapurpose.org ), which actually allows visitors staying at Jongomero Camp and Ras Kutani to take out much needed medical and educational supplies in their luggage – it-s a simple concept that really makes a big impact on the lives of the local communities!

Luxury Trips www.luxurytrips.com toll-free 800-735-0752) is offering a six-night safari and beach package from $4,839 per person (based on two sharing). Valid for selected departures in June 2012, the price includes internal flight transfers from Dar es Salaam, three nights staying at the boutique Jongomero Camp which includes a walking safari each day, game viewing drives in open sided 4×4 vehicles, concession and park entrance fees and three nights at the luxurious beach retreat of Ras Kutani on a full-board basis.
