Guadalajara, Mexico – Hotels

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Because Guadalajara is so spread out geographically, driving distances between hotels can be as much as 30+ minutes. Note: some of these hotels are located in Tlaquepaque, an artisan based suburb about 20 minutes from downtown Guadalajara. We have visited, stayed or received recommendations for most of the ones listed below. Readers have also emailed us their comments about some of these hotels and in some cases have suggested additional … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Restaurants

by Dave · Leave a Comment

From personal experience visiting other Mexican cities including Guadalajara, I have found that the cleanest restaurants and the ones with generally very good food are located in larger hotels. However, one should not overlook the smaller restaurants - do not rely solely on online ratings, ask locals for recommendations. Any prices listed are rough estimates for the cost of dinner for one person. However, most of these restaurants serve lunch … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Hotel Frances

by Dave · 2 Comments

We highlight this hotel on its own page within our Guadalajara guide because of its uniqueness as being the oldest hotel in the western hemisphere. Hotel Frances Guadalajara is located in the heart of Guadalajara's downtown historic district, within a short walk of Plaza Tapatia, address: Maestranza 35. Hotel Frances was founded in 1610; it was renovated and restored in the early 1980's. Priced reasonably with plenty of old world charm. During … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The small scenic town of Hopland (population around 800) is situated about two hours (1 hour 45 minutes on a good day) north of San Francisco along the 101 Freeway or about 45 minutes north of Santa Rosa. Hopland is in Mendocino County and located on the western side of the Russian River. The 101 is a freeway the entire way from San Francisco until several miles south of Hopland where it turns into a 2 lane road. Reminiscent of parts of the 5 … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Lodging

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Lodging in and immediately around Hopland lodging is extremely limited. Visitors to Hopland might consider staying in Cloverdale (about 15 minutes to the south of Hopland) or in Ukiah - only about 15 minutes north of Hopland (both Cloverdale and Ukiah are easy drives to and from Hopland). Alternatively, Lakeport is about 40 minutes to the east - the quickest route being the very windy and slow Highway 175 (with parts of the road sometimes single … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Shopping

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Country Porch Antiques is located in NoHo (north Hopland) at 13201 S. Highway 101 and is run by three women: Patty, Sherri and Linda. A must visit bucket list vintage store, this is a surprising find in such a small town. Located in an old hardware store, their collection of always changing items is spread out over 5,000 square feet. One can spend an hour in this store - easily - browsing through a diverse collection of unique collectibles … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Restaurants

by Dave · Leave a Comment

While Hopland is small, it does feature a surprisingly number of good restaurants. Here are a few we have visited to date: Blubird Cafe has been located in downtown Hopland for years and is our go to restaurant when we find ourselves in town. The service is friendly, the food delicious. Recommended items include the elk burger and the Tuscan salad with the addition of ahi tuna on top. Many ingredients are sourced locally including local beef … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Real Goods Solar

by Dave · 3 Comments

Real Goods in Hopland is a solar educational center that was built in the mid 1990's. Their original history dates back to the 1970's; founder John Schaeffer started Real Goods in the town of Willits (and he actually sold the first solar panel in the United States). They are located at 13771 South Highway 101 on the east side of the road. You will see the signs for Real Goods as you drive up the 101. Real Goods suggests you donate $5/vehicle as … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Wine Tasting

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Tiny Hopland contains a number of tasting rooms which deliver down to earth experiences for visitors - focusing on wines from Mendocino County. Although there are many wineries in Mendocino County including a number of tasting rooms in Hopland, this area does not have the recognition that perhaps Napa and Sonoma County have obtained over the decades. For the consumer, that is not a bad thing. Mendocino County is producing some stellar wines (the … [Read more...]
