Visitors and Locals Alike Ring in the New Year with Free Public Event at Innovation District Park

Providence, RI (December 13, 2023) – The Providence Tourism Council and the City of Providence are thrilled to announce the return of a citywide New Year’s Eve celebration at the Michael Van Leesten Pedestrian Bridge on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

“It has been many years since the City of Providence has seen a free public New Year’s Eve Celebration. The Providence Tourism Council is excited to bring this tradition back with our Illuminate PVD Fireworks show and a celebration of our artistic communities as we get an early start in ringing in the new year in our creative capital,” says Alexis Gorriarán, Chair and Commissioner of the Providence Tourism Council.

At 195 Innovation District Park, festivities will illuminate the night from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. The Guild will be on hand, serving beverages to the 21+ crowd, while food trucks such as Masa Taqueria and A Mano Pizza, interactive art activations, and roaming entertainment, including the Providence Drum Troupe, Extraordinary Rendition Brass Band and local musician Jose Docen, promise enjoyment for all ages.

“I am thrilled to share that the City of Providence is hosting a spectacular, free New Year’s Eve celebration that everyone can enjoy,” said Mayor Brett P. Smiley. “Join us downtown with your loved ones for an evening full of music, art, great food, and a fireworks display to shine over our vibrant city as we ring in a new year full of promise and prosperity for all of Providence.”

There will be a lighting of WaterFire’s braziers surrounding the pedestrian bridge, starting at 7:00 p.m., setting the stage for the Providence Tourism Council’s Illuminate PVD Fireworks show at 8:30 p.m. sharp. The Michael Van Leesten Pedestrian Bridge offers the perfect vantage point, providing views of the fireworks on the Providence River.

5:00 pm – The Guild PVD Beer Garden and Food Truck offerings
7:00 pm – WaterFire’s Starts At Sunset Activation, artists, roaming musicians and entertainment
8:30 pm – Illuminate PVD Fireworks show
9:30 pm – Official programming ends and enjoy the many happenings at local Providence establishments

“WaterFire is excited to be working with the Providence Tourism Council once again to bring back a special Starts at Sunset activation on the 29th anniversary of WaterFire’s first lighting in Providence. We join the PTC and the City of Providence in encouraging visitors to join us in celebrating another year of magic by the river.” says Peter A. Mello, Managing Director + coCEO of WaterFire Providence.

The goal of early activities is to create an event that is accessible to families allowing them to make the most of the celebratory evening in Providence together. Consider securing a reservation at one of the many restaurants offering special New Year’s Eve menus or attending a vibrant party at venues like The Beatrice, Renaissance Hotel, Marriott, The Graduate or Aloft. Extend your celebration by booking a hotel for the night and relish a leisurely New Year’s Day in Providence.
