by Dave · 3 Comments

Real Goods in Hopland is a solar educational center that was built in the mid 1990's. Their original history dates back to the 1970's; founder John Schaeffer started Real Goods in the town of Willits (and he actually sold the first solar panel in the United States). They are located at 13771 South Highway 101 on the east side of the road. You will see the signs for Real Goods as you drive up the 101. Real Goods suggests you donate $5/vehicle as … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Wine Tasting

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Tiny Hopland contains a number of tasting rooms which deliver down to earth experiences for visitors - focusing on wines from Mendocino County. Although there are many wineries in Mendocino County including a number of tasting rooms in Hopland, this area does not have the recognition that perhaps Napa and Sonoma County have obtained over the decades. For the consumer, that is not a bad thing. Mendocino County is producing some stellar wines (the … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Sho-Kah Wah Casino

by Dave · 1 Comment

NOTE: all good times must come to an end. This casino is now permanently closed. If it reopens we will update this review. We keep our notes below for nostalgia purposed only. Sho-ka-wah Casino is located a short drive east of Hopland. As you drive northbound on the 101 take a right at Highway 175. The sign at the junction here may say its only 3 minutes to the casino - but in reality its at least 10 minutes (more or less). You will … [Read more...]

The sites and attractions listed below are not only located within the city of Monterey but also on the Monterey peninsula and vicinity. Cannery Row is a historic waterfront region in the town of Monterey that today has been converted to shops, restaurants and hotels. This used to be home to a number of sardine factories and warehouses serving the fishing area until this industry collapsed in the 1950's. The last cannery in operation was the … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Historical

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Monterey is rich in California heritage - many of these old buildings are well preserved. Most of these historical sites are within a short walk of the downtown area - and about a 15-20 minute walk from Fisherman's Wharf. Many of these sites are related to the government's influence in Monterey. Monterey used to be the capital of Alta California. An excellent history resource regarding Monterey is: www.montereyhistory.org   Colton … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Nearby Towns

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Note that despite a fairly small population in Monterey and surrounding communities - during rush hour traffic can be quite bad in and around Monterey - in the Cannery Row area and Highway 1 in and around Sand City. Allow extra time if traveling during these early morning and late afternoon weekday times. Castroville is a small town about 20 minutes north of Monterey - located just off of Highway 1. The self anointed artichoke center of the … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Wine Tasting

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Monterey wineries often focus on a number of lighter style varietals including their well-known Pinot Noir (especially from the Santa Lucia Highlands - above the Salinas Valley) and Chardonnay. One can find wines made from numerous other varietals. At last count, over 42 unique wine grape varietals were being commercially grown in Monterey County. Rather then dominated by winery tasting rooms, much of Monterey County is dominated by stand … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Carmel

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Carmel is a picturesque small town with a variety of art galleries, boutique hotels and tucked away restaurants. To some people Carmel may be categorized by only two words: art galleries. This town was established in 1904 by a group of artists and writers as a retreat center. The original flavor of the town is still preserved today. It has a unique individuality and small village charm. There are many different architectural styles, many … [Read more...]
