From Camping with Nomads to Exploring Tehran

June 12, 2016 by Dave4 Comments

The past few days I've been enjoying life with a group of nomads who move around the deserts of central Iran. They regularly herd large numbers of sheep and goats; I was able to join them as they moved one such herd from the flat lands up into the mountains. It is a life in motion for the herders and their animals; both are moved around continuously in search of food and water. Donkeys accompany the herds carrying shelter and additional food and … [Read more...]

Far and Away, Flat Out, The West’s Best Road Trip

June 8, 2016 by Richard BangsLeave a Comment

It feels like we’re driving to the edge of the world where the water falls off. Infinity is just ahead. To the right are mountains that arc up from the basement of time. On the left, a dry lakebed now glassed with salt. This is the driest state in the country, not so surprising, but it is also the most mountainous, with some 300 ranges. If you look at a satellite photo of earth at night one of the brightest pixels is Las Vegas in … [Read more...]

The Hardest Place in the World to Visit

May 7, 2016 by Richard Bangs3 Comments

The covering has the disconcerting effect of obnubilating as well as illuminating the woman behind it. Shrouded in black niqab and ankle-length abaya, she floats towards me. Behind, her friends are firing salvos of cell-phone photos, as though we foreigners are exotic beasts in a zoo. She stops, and through her veil, in perfect English, asks, “Where are you from?” “California.” “What city?” “Los Angeles.” “What part?” … [Read more...]

Amasya, a Gem in Turkey’s Black Sea Region

April 8, 2016 by Inka Piegsa-QuischotteLeave a Comment

As so often happens, it all started with a story. “Have you ever heard the legend of Ferhat and Sirin?” my Turkish friend asked whilst we were discussing some pretty interesting Turkish folklore characters of which there are plenty. “No,” I replied, ear cocked and pen poised, ready to take note of another tale for my growing collection. “Ah, it’s  so sad, sooo romantic,” she sighed being a consummate actress into the bargain. “You see, it all … [Read more...]

Visit Turkey’s Most Photographed Beach, Oludeniz near Fethiye

March 18, 2016 by NedLeave a Comment

During the dark days of winter, many dream of the summer, sun, sea and sand and over the years, companies marketing different destinations around the world have used images to promote travel, holidays and their locations in particular. One of the oft used photographs, certainly within the Continent of Europe, is the stunning ‘blue lagoon’ of Oludeniz, near Fethiye in the middle of the Turquoise Coast of Turkey. Oludeniz actually means ‘dead sea’ … [Read more...]

The Adventure Sports Capital of Colombia

March 15, 2016 by Maggie Abernathy4 Comments

The tiny town of San Gil, Colombia, is known as the “adventure sports capital of Colombia,” and my time there definitely lived up to the name. There are activities to suit every level of adventurer, including bungee jumping, paragliding, adventure caving, white water rafting, kayaking, cycling, rappelling, and canyoning. The central plaza in this friendly little town is a great place to unwind with a beer or a frozen mojito after a long day of … [Read more...]

Extra Fancy Sauce: Pebble Beach Food & Wine

March 11, 2016 by Rachel DuchakLeave a Comment

I can honestly say that I’ve never been to an event quite like Pebble Beach Food & Wine. Over. The. Top. As I pulled up to the Grand Tasting in my Honda CRV, I giggled at the sign which read, “Free valet parking when you drive your Lexus,” and knew that I was in for something completely different at this tasting event. As I walked from my car to the enormous white tents hosting the festivities, I had a momentary concern that my … [Read more...]

Visit Nazare Portugal – January 2016

January 1, 2016 by Dave1 Comment

This coastal town sits on the edge of a hill overlooking wide orangish sand beaches which extend up and down the coastline. This quaint European city is full of restaurants and places to stay and makes for a good base for exploring this coastal part of Portugal. It is only about 1 hour 15 minutes drive north of Lisbon so is a popular weekend getaway for tourists and locals a like. This part of Portugal can be very crowded from May to about … [Read more...]

Sunny Las Vegas on a Budget

December 25, 2015 by Kurt JacobsonLeave a Comment

Las Vegas vacations don’t have to be expensive. For starters, airfare from BWI Airport runs just over $200 roundtrip and many other airports have similar deals. On many trips to Vegas I have stayed at hotels on and off the Strip; I highly recommend Excalibur to those that want an affordable on-strip hotel. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and good sized for a fraction of what you would pay other on-strip hotels. Last time I paid just $54.80 per … [Read more...]
