Key Largo Beckons Conchs & Conch Lovers, April 23 – May 2

March 31, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys -- The Upper Florida Keys are to showcase their "conch" spirit during the second annual Key Largo Conch Republic Days set for Friday, April 23, through Sunday, May 2. Overflowing with frivolity, fun, feasts and feats, the festival is to include an unusual attempt to land the region in the "Guinness Book of World Records" for "extreme underwater ironing." Kicking off the celebration is a planned raising of the flag -- … [Read more...]

Hong Kong in December: A Great In-Between

January 7, 2010 by Anne BennettLeave a Comment

While most tourists prefer to head someplace warm and cozy to escape the cold of winter, I love to do just the opposite and head to Hong Kong. I am strangely drawn to the chill, the rains, and the wind. Besides, I also love the fact that while it is chilly, it does not snow, and no snow means no blizzards which is perfect for me. Hong Kong in winter is a refreshing and wonderful respite after an extended stay in tropical heat where it's 98 … [Read more...]

Street Food in Penang

December 18, 2009 by LyndseyLeave a Comment

Penang, an island on the east coast of Malaysia, is home to beautiful beaches, a colonial splendor, and exotic imperial architecture. But, I return every year to eat from a little cart by the side of the road. And I am not alone. When the British set up the port of Penang, they created a confluence point for Chinese, Thai, Malay and Indian traders who brought their own foods and their own spices to the island. Street food is a way of life in … [Read more...]

Old Quebec: A Tourist Destination par Excellence

August 16, 2009 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

Quebec City's magnificent castle-like Le Chateau Frontenac with its medieval stone towers, gables and copper turrets, we surveyed the St. Lawrence River. For a long time, we stood enjoying the enchanting view. From our vantage point, in this symbol of the city, it was easy to dream of the past - the time when Samuel de Champlain, in 1608, established the city, which was to become the cradle of French civilization in the Americas. For … [Read more...]

Summer Festivals in London

July 5, 2009 by HostelBookersLeave a Comment

Britain has its fair share of summer festivals, from the legendary Glastonbury to the crazy dressing up at Bestival on the Isle of Wight. But sometime the festival experience isn't all it's cracked up to be, with unpredictable weather, mud-soaked fields, grubby toilets and overpriced food putting a dampener on camping in the countryside. Luckily there are just as many top festivals in London, from weekend-long dance parties to more relaxed … [Read more...]

Trains and More Chaos

July 1, 2009 by DaveLeave a Comment

Chaos reigns at the New Delhi airport - pre paid taxis are a joke. Many people in old dirty clothes hanging around. The fog here was TERRIBLE last night. Its the norm in the winter during the nights with merely 5 to 7 feet visibility. We landed around 9pm and arrived at our hotel around midnight just to catch the New Year's festivities. Drive from airport normally takes 25 minutes! Hahaha yea. Driver kept stopping every few seconds while getting … [Read more...]
