A Few Words about Madagascar

May 15, 2010 by Bernard PollackLeave a Comment

Sometimes it's good to be cautious--and other times it's better to go with your gut. People told us not to visit Madagascar, that political conflict made the country unsafe for tourists. But we decided to go anyway because if we had listened to those voices, we'd never have gone to Nairobi, Kampala, or Kigali. We are cautious when we travel, but aware that our best and most eye-opening experiences are places well off the beaten … [Read more...]

Top 10 European Summer Festivals

May 6, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Since we're already into May, summer is right around the corner, and summer in Europe officially (kind of) means festivals. But these days, there are so many of them, it's hard to know what's good and what's not. The daddy of them all, Glastonbury, is sold out already, but here are 10 other you might want to try: Sonar, Barcelona, Spain (June 17-19): Its long title is the International Festival of Progressive Music and Multimedia Arts but … [Read more...]

Fake Money Story!

May 6, 2010 by Dave1 Comment

Recently came upon this brief tale from my first trip to Europe many years ago... Because I was well read up on the possible pick pocket incidents that could happen in Europe, I purchased a cheap wallet in the states, and then promptly slashed it with a Swiss army knife. Next I purchased some fake $100 and $50 US bills from a local supermarket. I placed these in the wallet and carried the wallet and the fake money around Europe in my shorts … [Read more...]

Five More Airports You’ll Want to Get Stranded In

April 19, 2010 by Julia BuckleyLeave a Comment

We've already told you about five US Airports you'd like to get stranded in, but the Europeans can hold their own pretty well too. Here are five airports that may not have slot machines or solar panels, but they'll keep you from expiring of boredom if your flight's delayed. Heathrow Terminal 5, London (LHR) Heathrow gets a bad rap - and deservedly so. Terminal 1 is an under-chaired, overused hell on earth, and 2 and 3 aren't much … [Read more...]

A Few Words about Tanzania

April 7, 2010 by Bernard PollackLeave a Comment

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Kigoma, Tanzania. Actually, we never even made it to Kigoma. Precision Air, one of only two airlines that flies to the remote region, had just suspended all flights for the next several weeks and the other airline was all booked. No worries, we headed to Zanzibar instead... Everywhere you look in Zanzibar there's a bounty of fresh vegetables, fruit, and spices. One of the "Spice Islands"-a group of … [Read more...]
