A Quotable Vacation, Nepal

June 14, 2013 by Rachel McCaffreyLeave a Comment

Tihar, or Diwali, came and went last week and I went to Pokhara for a mini vacation. After a rainstorm, dinner at a Nepali family’s house, and an impromptu whiskey with an old friend passing through Kathmandu, Kendra and I headed out to Pokhara via microbus on Tuesday morning. A day of travel on each end, we spent three full days in the town and it was a relaxing respite. We didn’t realize we chose to travel on the biggest day of the Diwali … [Read more...]

One girl’s adventures in the Valle de las Batuecas

June 9, 2013 by Anna PearceLeave a Comment

I don't have a great track record with my attempts to visit prehistoric paintings.  All my other travel plans seem to work out just fine, but not this one.  My attempt to visit the Lascaux cave paintings in the Vezere Valley in France failed when I discovered that the Lascaux caves are not in fact in Lascaux, the tiny mist-shrouded village I was standing in, but are in fact over half an hour's drive away.  Meaning on this particular occasion, I … [Read more...]

Kotor, Montenegro – June 2013

June 1, 2013 by Dave8 Comments

Kotor Montenegro is truly one of the gems of this small country. This picturesque charming town is located along Europe's southern most Fjord. Tall mountains rise from the salt water bay which on clear days is cobalt and deep blue. The entire old city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains narrow stone walkways, boutique shops and outdoor seating at restaurants line the small courtyards. Homestays are quite popular here - one way you … [Read more...]

Greenland – The World’s Coolest Place

May 24, 2013 by John Thompson6 Comments

Leaving the comfort of blue skies at 37,000 feet, above a thick cloud layer, we started our slow descent down into Greenland. It was hard to believe that we were actually stopping in Greenland, a place that I had only flown over so many times between the USA and Europe. It isn't a place I ever thought I would actually stop in. I always thought it was a place where no one ever went, somewhere inhospitable to life. It was hard to believe we … [Read more...]

Budget-Friendly Excursions in Florida

May 16, 2013 by Alejandro A.1 Comment

Florida is an iconic state. When someone says Florida, they imagine sprawling Disney theme parks, bright sun and beaches that attract beautiful, chiseled people. One might also imagine a Florida holiday costing a fortune, but if you plan ahead you can have the trip of your dreams without emptying your bank account, from cheap Florida flights to lazy days on the beach. Try to avoid planning your trip at a time that will coincide with … [Read more...]

Defining the Perfect Holiday

May 15, 2013 by Dave3 Comments

I was recently asked to write about my perfect holiday by the folks at Happiness Included. Their parent company focuses on a variety of International trips but Happiness Included is focusing on trips to Spain and Thailand. They are currently giving away a tree trip to Thailand - you can enter via their website; also check out some of their screen shots below. Death in Africa

May 12, 2013 by Richard Bangs3 Comments

While scouting for the first descent of the Baro River in Ethiopia, a tributary of the White Nile, I heard about a Peace Corps volunteer, Bill Olsen, 25, a recent graduate of Cornell, who decided to take a dip in the river at Gambella, a village near the South Sudan border. The locals warned to stay away from the river, which they claimed was busy with monsters. Bill ignored the cautions, and swam to a sandbar on the far side of the muddy river, … [Read more...]
