Schulz Museum

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The following is an article that first appeared in the April 2003 issue of Upbeat Times, a regional newspaper which is published once a month in Sonoma County, CA. I had just arrived at the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center and was waiting in the front lobby when a young girl skipped in and the first excited words out of her mouth were "Mom, look its Snoopy!" I immediately saw what attracted her attention. On the wall were several … [Read more...]

Zanzibar – Attractions

Dhows located in the surf of the beach in front of Nungwi.Stone Town is full of old buildings including many that are in a state of severe decay. This city seems like a tiny maze at times, however its difficult to get too lost - if you walk far enough you will either end up on the seafront or on Creek Road which is the outermost road in Stone Town. While in Stone Town be sure to visit the evening waterfront "fresh fish cookout." This event … [Read more...]

Bangkok, Thailand – Parks

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Sometimes you need a respite from the chaos of of Bangkok's urban world - and fortunately one does not have to go very far to find any of a number of Bangkok's green spaces. Despite being surrounded by buildings and busy streets, often these spaces feature much cleaner air then the nearby surroundings, are often quieter and sometimes offer a variety of activities for all ages (paddle boats, picnicking, exercise equipment and playgrounds). … [Read more...]

Bangkok, Thailand – Medical

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Medical and Dental work in Bangkok can save you several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on the type of work and procedures that you have done and which country you live in. Places really vary in price from the high end hospitals to the clinics you see scattered all over Bangkok. Note that some drugs you normally would need a prescription for in "western" countries are available without a prescription from Thai … [Read more...]

Lamu, Kenya – Attractions

by Dave · 2 Comments

I highly recommend hiring a guide for touring Lamu. Visitors probably will only need a guide for no more than 2 days as much of the town can be accessed on your own on foot. However, a guide will point out difficult to find attractions and may introduce you to some of the locals and hidden gems of the town. He can also be a good source of restaurant and lodging recommendations. Lamu is small enough where the guides are aware of most of the … [Read more...]

Lamu, Kenya – Lodging

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Lamu offers numerous boutique hotels and private accomodation. Do you have additional lodging options for this page? If so, please email them to Dave as we like to keep this page updated with current lodging options. I stayed in a small house located several streets inland from the harbor front. I always had a difficult time finding my way back - through a maze of narrow dirt streets from the harbor between the whitewashed walls of the … [Read more...]

Catalina, CA – History

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Human history on Catalina Island dates from about 7000 BC. The Gabrielino Indians were the first humans to live on the island. Soapstone was plentiful on the island and the natives created bowls and other implements from this rock (and then traded with natives living on the mainland). Juan R. Cabrillo became the first European to set eyes on the island in 1542. In the 1790's the sea otter population suffered tremendously due to the over … [Read more...]
