Vientiane, Laos – Activities & Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Dong Dok University is located several miles north of Vientiane and is a great place to meet Lao students. Often these students are interested in practicing foreign languages with tourists. Internet cafes are mentioned here because this USED to be an activity in and of itself! Back in the day, this city had the most internet cafe's of any city I had ever been to. These used to be predominantly located in the center of town and along Thanon Fa … [Read more...]

Morocco – Moroccan Rugs

by Dave · 12 Comments

Shopping for rugs in Morocco is an experience that can be unbelievably draining on you financially if you are not careful. It DOES NOT matter if you travel to Morocco already knowledgeable and aware of Moroccan sales tactics & techniques. As several guide books about Morocco say - Moroccan sales techniques are generally regarded as among the most sophisticated and effective in the world. More about this will be explained throughout this section. … [Read more...]

Morocco – Chefchaouen

by Dave · 1 Comment

According to several locals we met Chefchaouen is not the true Moroccan experience - they informed us that it has received too much influence from Spain. That said, having a Spanish influence does in no way detract from this town. This is somewhat of a tourist town - I was here during some far away war, viral outbreak or other scare and there were very few tourists present. Most of the locals I met were very welcoming and some were quite … [Read more...]

Morocco – Fes

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Fes is a city of over 1.3 million people, of which about 450,000 people live in the old medina - the walled city. For those who have never been to Morocco or visited an old town such as this - its unlike any western town on the planet. The medina area is truly like stepping back in time. Taken at the oldest university in Fes, which is now crumbling awayFes is one of the largest medieval type cities still in existence. At first glance the … [Read more...]

Vang Vieng, Laos – Water Activities

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Several tour companies located along the main street in Vang Vieng offer kayaking trips bundled with cave explorations and stops at small villages just north of town. Each tour operator displays a small billboard in front of their shop; these 'signs' are always covered with items such as photos from previous trips and pleased customer comments. Single day trips range in price from $15 to $25 dollars US. Its always a good idea to shop around … [Read more...]

Vang Vieng, Laos – Motorcycles

by Dave · 2 Comments

Several small businesses located in Vang Vieng rent motorbikes. Renting motorcycles is a great way to see the surrounding countryside and small towns near Vang Vieng. Motorcycle rental should be around 6 to 8 US dollars per day. You are responsible for getting gas. Sometimes the gas stations in town (and there are about 3 or 4 stations) run out of gas. I experienced this - fortunately the company I rented from had another family member … [Read more...]

Zanzibar – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Dhows located in the surf of the beach in front of Nungwi.Stone Town is full of old buildings including many that are in a state of severe decay. This city seems like a tiny maze at times, however its difficult to get too lost - if you walk far enough you will either end up on the seafront or on Creek Road which is the outermost road in Stone Town. While in Stone Town be sure to visit the evening waterfront "fresh fish cookout." This event … [Read more...]

Zanzibar – Shopping

by Dave · 1 Comment

Stone Town is one of eastern Africa's shopping meccas. I found several incredible antique stores specializing in east African tribal antiques from the 1600s through the 1900s. One such store was like walking back in time. Intricately carved horns, parchment scrolls, rawhide prayer books, wooden masks, wooden statues of every shape and size and many other types of antiques were on display. The owner has several partnerships with antique dealers in … [Read more...]

Kotobuki Sushi, Laguna Hills CA – June 2002

June 1, 2002 by DaveLeave a Comment

Kotobuki Sushi Laguna Hills - Next time you are in Southern Orange County, CA be sure to stop in for some excellent Sushi at Kotobuki located at 24351 Avenida De La Carlota in Laguna Hills. The restaurant is in a new looking shopping center. The "Sushi Master Chef Hiro" will probably tell you that his food is "awesome" - his praise of his own cooking isn't really needed. The food is awesome! While your eating, Hiro may even offer to entertain … [Read more...]
