The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas – November 2020

November 1, 2020 by DaveLeave a Comment

After you arrive at the airport and pick up your obligatory samples of free rum near the baggage claim jump into a waiting car (provided by the resort) or pickup your pre arranged rental car. The Ritz Carlton is located about as far from the airport as one can drive on the island which refreshingly is only about 25 minutes away. Once here, settle into your luxurious room and enjoy a bottle of wine or hors d’oeuvres provided by their culinary … [Read more...]

Exploring the Island of Efate, Vanuatu

March 1, 2020 by Dave12 Comments

Circling the island of Efate by vehicle takes about 2 hours without stopping. I wanted a more in depth experience so I joined a small tour hosted by Atmosphere Tours, based in Port Vila. As we left Port Vila on the only road that circles the island (built by the Americans) our guide duly pointed out the last electrical pole some few clicks outside of the city. Beyond that, the villages do not have government provided electricity and if they have … [Read more...]

A Perfect Vibe, Koh Mak, Thailand

August 15, 2019 by Dave23 Comments

A number of islands in Thailand or beach destinations, especially in the southern part of the country can be over tourist-ed at times and or are destinations for travelers who want to party. For many years I've been attracted to some of the islands in the north closer to the Cambodian border including one of my favorite islands in Thailand, Koh Kood. However, recently I made the trip to Koh Mak, a tiny neighboring island accessible via one of two … [Read more...]

An Off-the-Beaten-Track Island That’ll Blow Your Socks Off

July 17, 2019 by Philipp Meier1 Comment

Still hunting for beaches that you don’t have to share with any other foreigner? I know, the ticket touts promise you the moon. They show you leaflets with picture-postcard islands. White sands, abandoned shores, happy customers. They cajole you into going on a tour. You discuss it with your travel partner, eager to find Eden. And eventually, your urge to go on an adventure gets the better of you – you book the trip. The next day, the … [Read more...]

Hawks Cay: A Classic Florida Keys Resort Redefines Itself

April 6, 2019 by Allison Tibaldi2 Comments

If you think Florida is all early bird specials and theme parks where you’ll wait on long lines to sip butter beer, welcome to the Florida Keys. This 125-mile-long chain of islands is a natural wonderland that begins just south of Miami. Once you arrive, you’ll feel a million miles away from the crowds that a certain black-eared mouse attracts. Sandy Island, Anguilla – February 2019

February 1, 2019 by DaveLeave a Comment

This tiny strip of sand is a getaway from your getaway! The island features merely 0.6 of an acre of silky smooth white sand in an elongated shape tinged with the occasional colorful umbrella and the obligatory white beach chairs. From Sandy Ground Wharf it is only about a 12 minute power boat ride to the island. Once you arrive, you will be treated to a small restaurant that stays busy serving a variety of tropical drinks including some … [Read more...]
