Africa offers some of the best places in the world to encounter these giants up close. As a travel expert with 10+ years on safari all around Africa, I’ll guide you through where to see elephants in Africa, why these national parks are special, and when to visit them (some times are better than others). By the end, you’ll know where to find them in Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Kenya: Amboseli […]

But my recent return trip to this beautiful southern African nation refreshed my perspective. I was last here twenty years ago as a backpacker, and I often think back fondly of that adventurous trip. And while the country has come a long way, it’s also kept many of the things that make it such a neat experience. There’s far too much to see for me to list out in this one article, […]

Our stamina declines, our knees get weaker, and we start to suffer ailments that we knew nothing about in our younger years. But our quest for adventure doesn’t go away. So many of us older travelers get frustrated that we can’t do everything that we would like to do. Trekking to Everest base camp or expeditions to Patagonia start to become beyond our physical capabilities. So we are forced to look […]

This large country has only one major city, Gabarone, and Botswana is not greatly publicized when it comes to tourism. I’m not even sure how I found out what a great destination Botswana is. But at some point in my travel research, I decided I had to go on safari in Botswana, most famous for the Okavango Delta and Kalahari Desert. Genuine hospitality, beautiful scenery, not to mention an exciting time on safari all welcomed me to this amazing country. Botswana […]

The Victoria Falls Bridge crosses the Zambezi River which forms the border for both countries. So far I have visited 8 countries (Peru, Mexico, Philippines, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Mongolia, UAE and Brazil)…my highlights of those trips were: Trekking the Inca Trail in Peru Staying in a Yurt in Mongolia Sand dune boarding in Dubai Climbing the Chichen Itza pyramid in Mexico Swimming the Coastal […]

This fairly new property opened in May 2011 and was officially dedicated in July 2011 with his Excellency, Botswana’s President Seretse Khama Ian Khama attending the opening ceremonies. This is isolated luxury at its finest and rawest; the lodge is accessible by any of 3 dirt roads – which are more like 4wd tracks among the bush – there are no signs and you must reserve the rooms ahead of time. Long gone are the old days of backpacking – where amenities were basic and services on the light side. Here you have excellent Internet access (by sub Saharan Africa standards), a pool, full kitchen and a variety of falls and safari related activities to choose from. The backpackers lodge in Victoria Falls we stayed at even had several onsite masseuses! These are among the world’s greatest waterfalls – you can walk well over a kilometer to see their span.
